In a statement in Ankara, Ciller alleged that the developments along the" border" of the "TRNC" have grieved and worried everyone. She claimed that the developments were a serious "provocation" and should be interpreted as non-recongition of the "TRNC borders". Recalling that such faits accomplis were experienced during the Imia crisis, Ciller stressed that the Turkish Republic will not allow or accept such faits accomplis. She said: "As you know, such a fait accomplis was experienced during the Kardak issue. At the time, I clearly said that the soldier will have to go and the flag will have to be removed. That is what happened. Now I am again saying with the same determination: We will not allow such a thing. If the borders are violated and if an attempt is made not to recognize them, we will do whatever is necessary. Those who attempt to cross, the border will be reestablished. Let the entire world be aware of this. It is impossible to make concessions with regard to our determination on the issue. It is out of the question for us to accept such a fait accomplis. Let the entire world be aware of this. Let Greece also be aware of this." (MY)[02] Ciller expresses "regret" over death, injuries in CyprusAccording to ANKARA TRT Television (12.8.96), Acting Prime Minister, Tansu Ciller, issued a written statement today expressing regret over the fact that the "provocations" the Greek Cypriot side has engaged in for a long time and the actions launched by Greek Cypriot motorcyclists to "violate the borders" of the "TRNC" have resulted in death as well as injuries on both sides and among the UN forces.Ciller alleged that the incidents were caused by the Greek Cypriot demonstrators' attempts to forcibly enter the Turkish Cypriot sector after crossing the buffer zone controlled by the United Nations. In her statement, Ciller declared: "These actions, which were undertaken despite the repeated warnings issued by the TRNC authorities and the UN officials, will not serve the desired atmosphere of trust in Cyprus or the efforts for a just and lasting solution on the island." Pointing out that this action once again showed which side bears the responsibility for the absence of a solution in Cyprus until now, Ciller stressed that such actions undermine mutual trust and render the efforts for peace more difficult. The Acting Prime Minister declared that she expects the United Nations and all the sides concerned with Cyprus to adopt a clear and determined stand against such harmful and dangerous actions which undermine the atmosphere of peace. (MY) [03] Golhan Warns Greece on CyprusAccording to Ankara TRT Television Network (12.8.96), True Path Party (DYP) deputy leader, Mehmet Golhan, has declared that the recent incidents are aimed at exercising pressure on the "TRNC" but the Greek Cypriots or their supporters are not sufficiently strong to reinstate the 1963-1974 period in Cyprus. In a news conference in Ankara today, Golhan stated that despite all the efforts to secure an atmosphere of peace, tranquility, and security in Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot side is not in favour of peace. Noting that the "border violations" have rendered the peace negotiations more difficult, Golhan said: "It is impossible to intimidate the Turks by means of such actions. The Greek Cypriots and those who support such actions seem to have forgotten recent history." He added: "Neither the Greek Cypriots nor their supporters are strong enough to revert to the 1963-1974 period in Cyprus. Everyone should be aware of this. It is true that we want to live in peace. It is true that we do not covet anyone's territory. It is also true that we want to turn the Aegean Sea into a lake of peace and tranquillity. No one, however, should interpret our proposals or the olive branch we are extending as Turkey's weakness." Golhan stated that Turkey wants to resolve its problems with Greece peacefully at the negotiations table, but, if need be, the necessary actions will be undertaken. Asking that no one make the wrong calculations regarding the Turkish Cypriot community, Golhan warned: "This would end regretfully." (MY) [04] Turkish Cypriots on Sunday's IncidentsKIBRIS (13.8.96) asked various Turkish Cypriot people in the occupied areas - workers, students, pensioners and others - about Sunday's incidents. They all expressed their regret for the incidents, especially for the death of a young Greek Cypriot. They also expressed the wish that they will not be repeated in the future. (A.TH)[05] Denktash "receives" idealist Hearth Group from TurkeyThe local papers of today (13.8.96) report that a group of ultra rightist and racist idealist Hearth Organisation members from Turkey who arrived in the occupied area in the wake of the Greek Cypriot Motorcyclists' protest ride against the occupation and curtailing of the freedom of movement in Cyprus, visited Denktash in his "Presidential Palace".YENI DUZEN (13.8.96) reports under banner headline "Grey Wolf Denktash", that idealist who came from Turkey visited Denk- tash. YENI DUZEN says that around 150 idealists who arrived in the occupied area from various parts of Turkey, gathered in front of the idealist Hearths Organizations Chapter in the occupied Nicosia and from there marched to Denktash's residence. "In front of the 'Presidential Palace'" reports YENI DUZEN, "the group started shooting racist and fascist slogans 'Grey Wolf Denktash', 'Hands extended on Turks will be broken', 'Cyprus is Turkish and will stay Turkish'". YENI DUZEN says that this group arrived in the occupied area using the excuse of the Greek Cypriot motorcyclists' protest ride and adds that this group stirred up trouble and caused the escalation of the incidents. YENI DUZEN further reports that Denktash "received" the idealists who branded him "Grey Wolf" and shouted the above men- tioned slogans. He thanked them for their coming from Turkey and for extending their support. ORTAM (13.8.96) reports under banner headlines "Idealists at the Presidential Palace: Chieftain Turkes - Grey Wolf Denktash". Speaking to idealists Denktash welcome them and said: "The Greek Cypriots should sit and think 'only part of them came from Turkey. What shall we do if the whole of Turkey came?'." Denk- tash warned that if the Greek Cypriots do not give up this kind of protest activities they will face more trouble. Expressing the sorrow for the death of the Greek Cypriot youth lynched to death by the idealists gang, Denktash said: "We feel sorry for the mother and the family. The Greek Cypriots should not threaten us and they should not come to our barbeb wires." In an attempt to clear the idealists from their brutal and barbaric crime, Denktash declared that "Idealists did not kill the Greek Cypriot" implying that he knew who killed the young unarmed Greek youth. HALKIN SESI (13.8.96) reports under banner headlines "Idealists who came from Turkey visited Denktash". YENI DEMOKRAT and VATAN (13.8.96) give the news with the same title as HALKIN SESI. BIRLIK (13.8.96) in its turn reports prior to their depar- ture the idealists once more shouted: "Cyprus is Turkish and will stay Turkish". (MY) [06] Atun alleges that President Clerides "is Dragging the Island into a War"According to YENI DEMOKRAT (13.8.96) the so-called Prime Minister of the pseudo-state, Hakki Atun, has said that Sunday incidents show the level of mistrust between the two communities. Alleging that the Greek Cypriot leadership, which ignored the warnings and "encouraged" the action of the Greek Cypriot youth, is responsible for the incidents, Atun said: "One should derive the necessary lessons from these incidents". He further stressed that the inability of the UN forces to protect even the buffer zone proves how right the Turkish Cypriot side is in objecting to a multinational force. Atun said: "The parties interested in Cyprus must have realized which side they should be pressuring."He alleged that the policy pursued by President Clerides is dragging the island into a war. Claiming that Clerides is encouraged by the green light given to the Greek Cypriot application to the European Union, as well as his administration's recognition as the legitimate government, Atun called on all the concerned sides to realize this and put an end to their policies which encourage this intransigence. He further invited Clerides to the negotiating table in a bid to avoid such incidents in the future and put an end to provocations. (MY) [07] Four Deputy Congressmen in the occupied areaAccording to KIBRIS (13.8.96) four United States deputy Congressmen, Lydia Borland, Bill Spearman, Bob Wan Wicklin and Kenneth Mullinax arrived in the occupied area for a familiarisa- tion visit regarding the Cyprus problem.KIBRIS says that the four US deputy Congressmen arrived on Saturday as guests of the Turkish Cypriot History Association. They had meetings with Denktash, Hakki Atun, Halit Acarkan and Atay Ahmet Rasid. The paper adds that the four Americans today will visit the so-called East Mediterranean University, historic sites and places of the occupied Famagusta region, and tomorrow they will visit the occupied Kyrenia region. Speaking during the meeting with the visiting Americans, so-called Assembly Chairman Acarkan referred to last Sunday's events and alleged that the events showed that "the two commu- nities should live side by side and not together." The so-called Turkish and Defence Minister of the pseudo-state, Atay Ahmet Rasid, welcomed the visit and said: "One of the important dimensions of the Cyprus problem against the unfounded propaganda of the Greek / Greek-Cypriot lobbies is to present the realities." He expressed the hope that the familiarisation visit by the four Americans will prove useful. (MY) [08] Ecevit expresses opposition to Idealists coming to occupied areaAccording to YENI DUZEN (13.8.96) the leader of the Democratic Left Party, DSP, in Turkey, Bulent Ecevit, during a press conference yesterday said that he did not approve of the idealists going from Turkey to the occupied area. He said: "Their visit had drawbacks. Turkish troops and Turkish Cypriots have enough power to defend the TRNC reality."He also criticized idealists attack to the Greek consulate in Istambul. When asked whether Turkey is expecting a strong pressure from USA on the Cyprus problem prior to the US presidential elections, Ecevit said that prior to the US Presidential elections he does not expect a "definite and sharp" step |
