[01] Serdar Denktash: Greek Cypriots owe thanks to Turkish army

According to illegal Bayrak radio (6.8.96), Democratic Party (DP) leader Serdar Denktash reacted to the statement made by President Clerides, who said that they were resisting and will continue to resist to liberate the occupied area. Denktash said "the Greek Cypriots are here not because they resisted, but because the noble, humanitarian, and peace-loving heroic Turkish Army has allowed them to exist here."

In a written statement, Serdar Denktash said that he followed with great attention the remarks made by President Clerides during the demonstrations organized by the Varosha municipality at the Dherinia barricades on Sunday, 4 August.

Denktash recalled that the Greek Cypriots are here because the Turkish Army allowed them to exist here. He stressed that the Greek Cypriot leadership and people owe gratitude to the Turkish Army, because it saved the Greek Cypriot people from a Catholic massacre. He said that the expulsion of the Turkish Army - the real guarantee of peace - from the island is a dream, stressing that unless a just solution is reached to the Cyprus problem, the Turkish Army will remain in the island as a real peace force.

Denktash said that the DP calls on everyone to think what the consequences would be if Cyprus joined the EU before Turkey did so. He added: "The TRNC will take every measure together with motherland Turkey to prevent the realization of the Greek Cypriot Administration's dreams."

[02] Order is given by occupation forces commander to shoot the motorcyclists

KIBRIS (7.8.96) reports under banner headlines that the occupation forces' command has ordered the occupation troops on the confrontation line to shoot the Greek Cypriot motorcyclists who will attempt to cross into the occupied area.

KIBRIS quoting the occupation army sources reports that all the necessary measures have been taken and that "the TRNC borders are impossible to cross."

KIBRIS further reports that the occupation forces have informed the UN Peace Force about the measures they will take.

Turkish occupation army sources have declared that Greek Cypriot motorcyclists who will attempt to cross into the occupied area will pay it very dear.

KIBRIS also quotes that a high level Turkish occupation forces commander ordered the occupation troops "to break the bones of the Greek Cypriot motorcyclists that will try to cross into the occupied area and then hand them over to the UN."

KIBRIS says that the military sources refuse to detail on the measures. They just said: "Our main aim is to deter the Greek Cypriots to resort to such provocations. However, if the Greek Cypriots still continue to insist in their action, we will teach them a lesson so that they will never attempt such action." (MY)
