  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Pseudo-minister warns against Islamic fundamentalism

All the local papers of today (1.8.96) publish the statement of the so-called Minister of Education and Culture, Ahmet Derga, in which he warns the Turkish Cypriots to be alert against the ever-increasing Islamic fundamentalism in the occupied area.

He warned that unathorized Koran courses have dramatically increased in the occupied area. (M.Y.)

    [02] Population census

KIBRIS (1.8.96) reports that Turkey's State Statistics Institute and the pseudostate's "Planning Organization" will be cooperating during the general population census to be held in the occupied area in December. (M.Y.)

[03] Eroglu says "coalition" talks reach deadlock

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1530 hours, 31/7/96) there were no results on the issue of setting up a "coalition" between Democratic Party (DP) and National Unity Party (NUP). NUP leader Dervis Eroglu claimed that changes were made to the agreement, which was drawn up between the two party leaders, while DP leader Serdar Denktash announced that they approved the proposals submitted by the NUP. Stating that the NUP cannot accept the new DP proposals, Eroglu said that the work under way with the DP in a bid to set up a "coalition" has reached a deadlock.

In a news conference following the DP announcement that it approved the NUP proposals, Eroglu said that the negotiations reached a deadlock because of the DP proposals, which had nothing to do with the agreement drawn between the two party leaders. Claiming that DP submitted new proposals completely disregarding this agreement, Eroglu said that misleading information was presented to the public.

In reply to another question, Eroglu said that setting up a "government" with the Republican Turkish Party is not under consideration right now.

[04] Typhoid cases in occupied Yialoussa village

KIBRIS (1.8.96) reports that some of the workers at the nudists camp construction site at occupied Yialoussa village have contracted typhoid.

KIBRIS says that 70 of the workers have contracted typhoid.

Doctors also reported that the reason for the epidemic among the workers is the poor living conditions and the lack of hygiene. (M.Y.)
