He said: "The EU, disregarding the international treaties, considering Cyprus as a united whole, has initiated Cyprus' accession process. The time and the dateline are working. Despite the fact that the Turkish Republic says that according to the international treaties Cyprus cannot be a member to an organization to which Turkey is not also a member, the EU turns a blind eye to it. In fact there are three states that should deal with Cyprus: the Republic of Turkey, Britain and Greece. Now there is an attempt to add to these another 15 states. They will, each one, in line with its own interests, make the Cyprus problem more complicated." Claiming that for Turkey and the occupied area there exists no problem known as "Cyprus problem", Ecevit also alleged that for the last 22 years peace, freedom and democracy have been prevailing on the island. He accused the present Turkish officials of forgetting the argument that "Cyprus cannot enter into an organization where Turkey is not a member". "Instead of this", went on Ecevit, "they have started saying, `Let us solve the Cyprus problem, then we can think about its accession to the EU'. This is very worrying. It is neither sensible nor logical." He claimed that if the necessary measures are not taken by Turkey, the timetable for Cyprus will be put into practice and the pressure on the Turkish Cypriots will increase. "Considering this possibility, as DSP we are proposing a step. The aim of the EU is to break the ties between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. We will not allow this to happen. For this reason an autonomy relations treaty should be signed between the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC. With this the TRNC will continue to be an independent state, but its foreign relations and security could be undertaken by Turkey. This is already being done, what is needed is to place this on a legal basis." Ecevit added that he had conveyed this proposal to Erbakan and that Erbakan shares his worries.(MY) [02] Denktash threatens with jail those who violate the "borders"KIBRIS (18.7.96) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash commenting on the forthcoming anti-occupation protest ride by the members of the Cyprus Motorbike Federation said that any attempt to cross the Attila line "will be severely punished."He said that those who "violate" the "borders" will be committing a serious crime and that they will be put to jail and their motorbikes will be confiscated by the pseudostate.
