He first met with Inal Batu, Foreign Ministry deputy Under Secretary.Replying to reporters' questions before the meeting, Han Sung-chu said that he held positive talks in Cyprus and he believes his talks in Turkey will also be fruitful. He pointed out that he did not bring a plan in connection with the Cyprus problem. He said that he hopes a map can be drawn that can help solve the problem. Asked to comment on reports that the United States is getting ready to assume a more active role in Cyprus and that Britain appointed a special envoy to Cyprus, Han Sung-chu said that the two countries will play a more active role from now on, but that the efforts to solve the problem must be exerted within the framework of the international community and the United Nations. Han Sung-chu then met with Foreign Ministry Under Secretary Onur Oymen. Present at the meeting were Gustave Feissel, the UN Secretary General's deputy special envoy in Cyprus, and other officials. Meanwhile, in answer to a question at his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said that Turkey's aim is to reach a comprehensive and viable solution in Cyprus. "In all these efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, the UN Secretary General's goodwill mission constitutes the real negotiation process. The interest shown by the other countries by appointing special envoys can only help the UN Secretary-General's goodwill mission. Consequently, the efforts toward a solution must be overseen by the UN Secretary General and his special envoy. These are the messages we will give to the UN Secretary General's new special envoy during his Ankara contacts, just as we do during our other contacts in connection with the Cyprus problem", Akbel said.
