    NEWS ITEMS

[01] UN Secretary General's special Cyprus envoy holds talks in Ankara

According to TRT television network (13:00 hours, 3.7.96) Han Sung-chu, the UN Secretary General's special envoy in Cyprus, has started to hold contacts in Ankara. He first met with Inal Batu, Foreign Ministry deputy Under Secretary.

Replying to reporters' questions before the meeting, Han Sung-chu said that he held positive talks in Cyprus and he believes his talks in Turkey will also be fruitful. He pointed out that he did not bring a plan in connection with the Cyprus problem. He said that he hopes a map can be drawn that can help solve the problem.

Asked to comment on reports that the United States is getting ready to assume a more active role in Cyprus and that Britain appointed a special envoy to Cyprus, Han Sung-chu said that the two countries will play a more active role from now on, but that the efforts to solve the problem must be exerted within the framework of the international community and the United Nations.

Han Sung-chu then met with Foreign Ministry Under Secretary Onur Oymen. Present at the meeting were Gustave Feissel, the UN Secretary General's deputy special envoy in Cyprus, and other officials.

Meanwhile, in answer to a question at his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said that Turkey's aim is to reach a comprehensive and viable solution in Cyprus.

"In all these efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, the UN Secretary General's goodwill mission constitutes the real negotiation process. The interest shown by the other countries by appointing special envoys can only help the UN Secretary-General's goodwill mission. Consequently, the efforts toward a solution must be overseen by the UN Secretary General and his special envoy. These are the messages we will give to the UN Secretary General's new special envoy during his Ankara contacts, just as we do during our other contacts in connection with the Cyprus problem", Akbel said.

    [02] DP-RTP "coalition" resigns today

According to KIBRIS (4.7.96) the so-called DP-RTP coalition government of the pseudostate will be tendering its resignation today.

KIBRIS further reports that with a view to establishing a new "government" "official" contacts will start between the NUP and the DP today.

According to illegal Bayrak radio (12:00 hours 4.7.96) the "government" has resigned. (MY)

[03] Turkish Cypriot stubbed to death and robbed of her pension money

KIBRIS (4.7.96) reports under the banner headline "Savageness" and says that a 74-year old retired Turkish Cypriot woman was stubbed to death by an unknown assailant who also robbed the victim of her 74 million TL pension money.

The murderer also robbed the victim of her gold jewelry.

The residents of the Ay. Luca neighbourhood in occupied Nicosia, where the crime took place, told the paper that because of lack of safety during the right they are unable to leave their homes. "They urged that an end should be put to the free entry into the occupied area from Turkey."

Moreover, YENIDUZEN (4.7.96) as well reports the crime under banner headlines and says that the Turkish Cypriot community has started experiencing crimes which it had never been accustomed to in the past.

Turkish Cypriots who were for years living in the neighbourhood, because of lack of security, are selling their homes and are getting away from the area. YENIDUZEN reports that in the first seven months of 1996 six crimes were committed and they were four attempted murder cases. (MY)

[04] CD promotes the occupied area

YENIDUZEN (4.7.96) reports that a Compact Disc (CD) has been prepared with a view to promoting the occupied area.

The CD will be presented to the public by Mehmet Ali Talat during a press conference to be held tomorrow. (MY) EF/SK
