[01] Denktash to meet UN Secretary-General in Istanbul, 5 June

Denktash reported that after learning that President Glafcos Clerides asked to meet with Ghali on 11 June, the Turkish Cypriot side also requested a meeting. The request was accepted, Denktash explained, adding that the meeting will be held in Istanbul for health reasons.

Pointing out that from October 1994, President Clerides totally changed the negotiating agenda by introducing the bid to join the EU, Denktash remarked that the Turkish Cypriot side, in turn, wants to explain its own views to the UN Secretary General. Denktash stressed that the meeting he will hold with Ghali in Istanbul on 5 June will be an assessment of the situation. Denktash said: "I will explain to him why we are not progressing and why Clerides refuses to meet with us. The Secretary General proposed specific parameters in his Set of Ideas. The Greek Cypriot side wants to evade all of them and has therefore changed the agenda by raising the issue of accession to the EU."

Denktash alleged that the Turkish Cypriots are familiar with the tactics aimed at eliminating Turkey's rights and authorities over Cyprus and fully integrating with Greece. These tactics are unacceptable, he declared. Pointing out that he will convey all these matters to the UN Secretary-General, Denktash said that this meeting will not be one for reaching decisions. Therefore, Denktash explained, he is not going to Istanbul accompanied by other officials.

Every country is appointing a coordinator for Cyprus and it has become impossible to know what to discuss with whom, Denktash stated adding: "We want to pursue matters with the UN Secretary General within the framework of his goodwill mission. Our counterpart is the UN Secretary General, and the method is the one pursued within the framework of his goodwill mission."

[02] Turkish Geological survey team in the occupied area

The project will be carried out by the so-called Ministry of Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources of the pseudostate in cooperation with Turkey's Institute for Mines Survey and Research, MTA.

The 28-man technical team from MTA arrived in the occupied area to start the project. A 22 people team from the so-called Geology and Mines Department of the pseudostate will assist the Turkish team.

The 62 billion TL project will be completed at the end of 1998.

KIBRIS says that during the survey and research work the geological map of the occupied area on the 1:25000 scale will be drawn up where all the underground water resources, existing mines, and industrial raw materials will be noted.

KIBRIS says that the project will serve as basic source for future water and other development projects. (MY)

The UN Secretary-General is in Ankara since last night and will be having a series of meetings with Turkish state and government officials, during which the Cyprus problem will be one of the main subjects for discussion. (MY)
