    [01] Turkey says no change in US policy on Cyprus

    According to TRT television network (17:00 hours, 29.5.96) replying to reporters' questions during a news conference Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel declared that US State Department Spokesman's remarks concerning Greek Cypriot membership in the EU caused misunderstandings. Akbel explained that Turkey spoke to US officials following the statement and realized that there is no change in Washington's policy regarding Cyprus. Akbel noted that the new UN special envoy to Cyprus will be granted all the necessary assistance and cooperation in Turkey.

    [02] Boutros Ghali to discuss Cyprus problem in Ankara

    According to YENIDUZEN (30.5.96) the UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali during his visit to Ankara today will meet with high level Turkish Government officials and will discuss with them various issues including the Cyprus problem.

    A senior Turkish official told a Turkish semi government News Agency Anatolia correspondent that the Turkish officials will underline to the UN Secretary-General the importance of reviving his good offices mission regarding the Cyprus problem.

    The same official said that Ankara wants a settlement within the UN framework, and that Turkey is not happy regarding the search for a Cyprus settlement outside the UN framework.

    Ankara had expressed its dislike when the EU and some other countries appointed special Cyprus representatives.

    YENIDUZEN further reports that it is expected that on 5 June Ghali will have a meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. (MY)

    [03] Austrian students in the occupied area

    According to HALKIN SESI (30.5.96) 14 students and an assistant professor from Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts arrived in the occupied area two weeks ago for a workshop.

    The group under the supervision of Prof. Michael Hedwing will today exhibit the work they have done in the occupied area.

    Prof. Hedwing has been visiting the occupied area since 1987. (MY)
