    NEWS ITEMS

[01] "Communal Solidarity Association" chairman speaks of economic collapse and "communal interests"

According to ORTAM (9.5.96) the chairman of the "Communal Solidarity Association", Huseyin Osman, has declared that emigration from the occupied area has reached terrible dimensions.

He said that a great effort is being exerted for not settling the Cyprus problem adding that the Turkish Cypriot community has reached the point of annihilation.

Huseyin Osman went on and said: "Who are responsible for this economic collapse? How could we overcome this bottleneck?

The Turkish Cypriot community is no more sovereign in its country. Policies should be charted with which the Turkish Cypriots will be sovereign and rule themselves.

Turkey should give up the claim to rule and direct the Turkish Cypriot community. The transfer of population from Turkey to Cyprus should be stopped immediately. The solution of the Cyprus problem should not only be thought of in line with the 'national interests' but communal interests as well. Policies charted in line with the 'national interests' have pushed the Cyprus problem into non-solution. The common point where both national and communal interests meet is the federal settlement. We are partners and have rights on all over Cyprus.

Greece and Turkey consider Cyprus together with the Aegean issue, and unless a settlement is reached in the Aegean they do not want a settlement in the Cyprus problem. It is impossible to bring peace to Cyprus, unless the Aegean problem is settled on their initiative. They will continue to play with us.

The communal forces, active in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, who want settlement in Cyprus, should come together at a platform and look for international support.

Time has come for Cypriots to own Cyprus". (MY)
