    [01] Denktash on Clinton report

According to ANATOLIA agency (14:49 hours, 3.5.96) Rauf Denktash has stated that US President Bill Clinton's last report on Cyprus reflects the realities. He added that the contacts held on the Cyprus issue were objectively presented in the report.

During his statement following a meeting with the British High Commissioner David Madden, Denktash alleged that the United States has to free itself from its inclination to consider the Greek Cypriot side as the legitimate government of Cyprus.

Denktash went on to say that "the Turkish Cypriot side is one of the owners of Cyprus", and called on "the United States, including Clinton, the EU countries, and everybody to consider the Turkish Cypriots equal to the Greek Cypriots and to treat them equally."

[02] Serdar Denktash wins leadership contest

According to TRT television network (17:00 hours, 5.5.96) the Democratic Party (DP) held its party congress in occupied Nicosia and DP Secretary General Serdar Denktash, son of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, was elected party leader.

During the DP congress Atun was unanimously elected honorary party leader. Serdar Denktash and deputy party secretary Taner Etkin vied for the post of party leader. Denktash was elected the DP's second leader with 629 votes against Etkin's 331 votes. Although Serdar Denktash was elected party leader, Atun will continue to serve as "prime minister" for the time being.

[03] Denktash calls President Clerides to talk 'face to face'

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 4.5.96) Rauf Denktash has once again called on President Glafcos Clerides to meet face to face with him in a bid to solve the Cyprus issue. Denktash said: "We will solve this issue together by respecting each other's equality, sovereignty, rights, and status and by taking as basis the principles of bizonality and the guarantee and alliance agreements."

Replying to a question posed by illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency) regarding President Clerides' comments that the path to a solution cannot be paved unless Turkey changes its mode of thinking, Denktash claimed that Turkey did not create the Cyprus issue.

[04] Denktash speaks of a "Greek invasion"

According to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 4.5.96) Rauf Denktash has claimed that Greece is pursuing its enterprise to won Cyprus, adding that the danger still exists. Denktash issued a statement to illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency) about Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos's remarks during his visit to Cyprus that said that Turkish-Greek relations can be improved only if Turkish soldiers withdraw from Cyprus. In his statement, Denktash claimed that Turkish soldiers are stationed in Cyprus "in a bid to prevent the eradication of the Turkish Cypriots through a Greek invasion, which will transform Cyprus into a Greek Cypriot republic."

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 3.5.96) two persons have been captured in connection with the hurling of bombs at the Republican Turkish Party's Nicosia district organization building and at a nightclub last Thursday morning.
