    [01] Atun cedes candidacy for DP leader, Denktash, Etkin to run

    According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 27.4.96) Hakki Atun, Democratic Party (DP) leader and "prime minister", has announced that he will not submit his candidacy for party leader during the DP congress to be held on 5 May. In a statement Atun said that he decided to withdraw his candidacy in a bid to allow the restructuring and strengthening of the party.

    Following Atun's decision, running for party leadership at the upcoming DP congress will be Serdar Denktash and Taner Etkin, who had previously announced their candidacy for the position.

    [02] Denktash reportedly favourably impressed with Kornblum

    According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 27.4.96) Rauf Denktash has stated that he informed John Kornblum, US assistant secretary of state, that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to hold negotiations under equal conditions. Denktash met with Kornblum, who arrived in Cyprus within the framework of his visit to the region, and conveyed to him the views of the Turkish Cypriot side.

    In a statement to the press after his meeting with Kornblum, Denktash noted that the US guest left him with a favourable impression and described Kornblum as an experienced and impartial diplomat who attaches importance to equality. He said he explained to Kornblum everything that he must know and submitted to him an extensive file.

    Reiterating that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to hold negotiaitons based on equality, Denktash added that the talks cannot begin before the end of June, adding that he is in good health and will continue to rest until 15 May. EF/SK
