[01] ERBAKAN OPPOSED TO ANY NEGOTIATIONS ON CYPRUS

According to TRT Television Network (1700 hours, 24/4/96) Welfare Party leader Necmettin Erbakan has declared that there is no need to hold any negotiations regarding Cyprus. Instead, Erbakan stated, efforts must be exerted for the recognition of the "TRNC".

A so-called parliamentary delegation led by "Speaker" Ayhan Halit Acarkan called on Erbakan and conferred with him for some time. During the meeting, Acarkan said that the Turkish Cypriot side insists on its call to start negotiations as soon as pos- sible.

Erbakan, in turn, stated that his views concerning Cyprus have been clear for the past 22 years. Even on the day of the invasion his party contended that there should be two independent states in Cyprus and that the only solution is for these states to live side by side, Erbakan remarked. He alleged that time has justified his views.

"We are opposed to all these negotiations. There is no need to hold any talks whatsoever in this regard. We have nothing to discuss. The best solution is the perpetuation of the TRNC as an independent state, a situation that has been in effect for the past 22 years. The TRNC should serve its own people and gain economic strength. We are against all these futile efforts such as establishing a federated state with the Greek Cypriots.", Erbakan said.

[02] JOHN CORNBLUM TO MEET WITH TURKISH CYPRIOT "OFFICIALS"

According to KIBRIS (26/4/96), John Cornblum, assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, will have a meeting today afternoon, at the so-called Presidential Palace, with Atay Ahmet Rasid, so-called Foreign Minister of the pseudostate, and "presidential advisors" Ertekun and Algun. At lunch time, a reception will be given in his honour in occupied Kyrenia that will be attended by "Prime Minister Hakki Atun, "Deputy Prime Minister" Mehmet Ali Talat, "Foreign Minister" Atay Ahmet Rasid and party leaders represented at the pseudo-Assembly. Invited to attend are US Ambassador, Richard Boucher, US State Department Coordinator for Cyprus, James Williams, and John Cavanaugh, US State Department South Europe Desk Director.

[03] RUSSIAN UNIONISTS TO VISIT THE OCCUPIED AREA

According to KIBRIS (26/4/96) Russian unionists, who were in Ankara to attend the celebrations for the Children's Day on 23rd April 1996, met with Turkish Cypriot unionists during a luncheon at the Turkish Grand National Assembly and were invited to visit the occupied area. The paper says that some of the Russian unionists have accepted the invitation and will visit the occu- pied area soon.

[04] NEW "TRNC REPRESENTATIVE" IN LONDON

According to KIBRIS (26/4/96) Hakki Muftuzade, so-called Foreign Ministry "advisor", has been appointed, as of 1st May 1996, as the new so-called representative of the pseudostate to London.

[05] TURKISH STATE MINISTER TO VISIT OCCUPIED AREA

According to KIBRIS (26/4/96), a so-called parliamentary delegation headed by "Speaker" Ayhan Halit Acarcan was received by Ayfer Yilmaz, Turkish State Minister responsible for Cyprus Affairs. Yilmaz said she will be visiting the occupied area next month for on-the-spot evaluation of the problems submitted to her by the delegation.
