    NEWS ITEMS

    [01] Talat criticizes Turkey

In an exclusive interview to KIBRIS (19.4.96) the chairman of the Republican Turkish Party and so-called State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the pseudostate Mehmet Ali Talat said that "Turkey is responsible for the good as well as the bad things that happened in Cyprus."

He went on to say that "if there is a bad economic situation in Cyprus, if the number of public servants is high and there are no investments, again Turkey is responsible for it."

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Talat said that they attach great importance to the security of the Turkish Cypriots.

As for the functioning of the pseudo-coalition government, Talat claimed that in the coalition programme everything has been put down in a nice manner, however, he says, when it comes to put into practice this programme the partners do not adopt the same stance.

He said that he also favours putting into practice the confidence-building measures. (MY)

[02] New director of Turkey's Central Bank

According to Turkish Daily News (18.4.96), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel reportedly endorsed a Cabinet decree appointing prominent banker Gazi Ercel as new Central Bank governor.

The semi-official Anatolia News Agency said last Wednesday that the decree would take effect today after being published in the Official Gazette.

Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Tansu Ciller, chairman of the coalition partner True Path Party, were at odds over the appointment to the Bank.

Ercel, a former government bureaucrat, was chief executive at Tutunbank from 1994.

    [03] Colin Jennings meets Akinci

KIBRIS (19.4.96) reports that the Deputy British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr Colin Jennings, paid a courtesy visit to the leader of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) Mustafa Akinci on the occasion of his (Mr Jennings') departure from Cyprus. (MY)
