The meeting was held within the framework of a well-wishing visit on the part of Feissel.In a statement after the meeting, Feissel said this was the first time he has visited Denktash since his illness. Replying to a question, Feissel said the sides maintain their positions regarding the Cyprus problem. He added: "I will give the representatives of the five permanent members my assessment of the latest situation in Cyprus. I will brief them. In other words, it will not be a written report." Asked what he thinks of the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem, Feissel said there are no new developments in the process of finding a solution to the problem. [02] Turkish Commander praises "Turkish Peace Force Mission"According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 13.4.96), Lieutenant General Hasan Kundakci, commander of the so-called Turkish Peace Force in Cyprus, has claimed that the "force has successfully fulfilled its peace force mission ever since 1974." He said that the Greek Cypriots have recently been buying new weapons, adding that this will not change anything because the Turkish troops are taking all kinds of countermeasures on a timely basis.Kundakci gave a cocktail party in honour of the so-called "Turkish Cypriot Fighters Association". In a speech, he referred to the EU issue and alleged that membership in the EU will take place after there is a solution in Cyprus and after Turkey becomes a member. [03] Mesut Yilmaz meets Serdar DenktashAccording to TRT Television Network (17:00 hours, 12.4.96) Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz last Friday received a delegation of Democratic Party "parliamentarians" from the pseudostate, headed by Serdar Denktash.Yilmaz said that he and the visiting delegation will discuss the state of relations between Turkey and the "TRNC", the economic problems facing the "TRNC", and the Cyprus problem. He pointed out that Turkey has always been closely interested in developments in the "TRNC" and in the progress of the Cyprus problem internationally. Therefore, he said, the current visit will be very useful. Serdar Denktash said that the delegation was there to convey what is required from Turkey. He expressed the belief that Turkey will move toward much better days. [04] Denktash on President Clerides' statement of no common groundAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 13.4.96) Rauf Denktash has called on President Clerides "to renounce the lie that there is no common ground for talks". Denktash replied to a question by illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot New Agency) concerning his reaction to President Clerides' message to US President Bill Clinton and to the UN Secretary General that he is ready for talks provided common ground is found first. Denktash alleged that both Clinton and the UN Secretary General are aware that there is common ground.[05] USA and European educational delegations in the occupied areaAccording to KIBRIS (12.4.96) delegations from the Higher Education Accrediting Council of the USA and Europe will be arriving in the occupied area separately to carry out inspection and investigation at the so-called American University of Kyrenia (GAU).The European delegation headed by Dr. Bryan Holden will start work tomorrow and continue until the 14th April. The US delegation will start on 15 April and complete on 18 April. KIBRIS further reports that the GAU is one of the active members of the ECBE (European Council for Business Education) and USA's International Federation for Business Education (IFBE). The US delegation (KIBRIS 13.4.96) will be headed by Dr. John H. Ericson (Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges) and Dr John Jack Kelly. The Foreign Relations Director of the Southern University Washington D.C., Prof. James H. Allen Jr, will join Dr Ericson during his visit to the occupied area. (MY) [06] Purchase of new Airbus partly financed by Credit AgricoleAccording to KIBRIS (14.4.96) the loan agreement for the Airbus A310-300 bought by the so-called Cyprus Turkish Airlines of the pseudostate was signed in Paris yesterday.The French finance firm Credit Agricole will provide a 32 million dollar credit for the purchase of the plane, whose total price is 42 million US dollars. The remaining 10 million US dollars will be provided by Turkey's Is-Bank. KIBRIS had reported that the Airbus A310-300 was currently in Jordan at Amman airport. The new plane was named "Gecitkale", the Turkish name given to the occupied village of Lefkoniko, and will fly under the code name of the Turkish Cypriot terrorist organization "TMT". (MY) [07] =A32 million valued heroin found on Turkish travellersAccording to Turkish Cypriot newspaper Cyprus Today (13.4.96) two men from Turkey, Sakir Kayar and Dursun Karaderili, were arrested by British customs officers when they were found to be carrying 20 kilos of heroin with a street value estimated at =A32 million.The men had flown to Stansted Airport on a so-called Cyprus Turkish Airlines flight and are thought to be part of a larger ring smuggling drugs into Britain. British police are said to have recently discovered a heroin "factory" in London, thought to have been controlled by two gun-possessing Turkish Cypriots. [08] Turkish 1996 Draft Budget at TL3.512 quadrillionAccording to TRT Television Network (7:00 hours, 13.4.96) the Turkish Assembly Planning and Budget Committee has approved the 1996 draft budget.The 1996 fiscal budget was approved at 3.512 quadrillion Turkish Lira (TL: approximately $48 billion). The revenues targeted amounted to TL2.65 quadrillion, so the deficit forecast was TL861 trillion. Therefore, the committee made an additional allotment of TL742 trillion to the budget, and increased targeted revenues by TL290 trillion. The investments envisioned in the budget were increased from TL190 trillion to TL255 trillion. The greatest share of the budget goes to the National Defence Ministry with TL325 trillion. This is followed by TL257 trillion allotted to the National Education Ministry, and TL98 trillion to the Health Ministry. |
