[01] DENKTASH'S CONDITION NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (0600 hours, 5/3/96), Rauf Denktash was hospitalized at the Ibni-Sina Hospital in Ankara following his heart attack. He was transported to Ankara aboard a medically equipped plane for further tests. It was reported that his condition does not give rise to concern.

Processor Dervis Oral, head of the cardiology department at the Ibni-Sina Hospital, stated that the necessary intervention and tests were carried out in Cyprus. He reported that the patient has not developed any of the complications that follow a heart attack and that the risk of such complications is diminishing daily. Oral said that if Denktash's condition continues in this vein, he will undergo angiography on 11 March and, if necessary, will also undergo angioplasty.

[02] ACARKAN "GREATLY DISTURBED" AT NOT MEETING VAN DEN BROEK

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1630 hours, 5/3/96) Ayhan Halit Acarkan, "acting president and speaker of the Republican Assembly", has said that "he was greatly disturbed by Hans van den Broek, the EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, not showing the necessary consideration to the principle of political equality."

In a statement, Acarkan alleged that Van den Broek, who could not meet with Rauf Denktash in view of his sudden illness, disregarded the fact that the "assembly speaker" acted on his behalf, claiming that the meeting, which did not take place with Denktash, should have been held with the "assembly speaker".

Complaining that Van den Broek found it natural to hold a meeting with the Greek Cypriot assembly speaker acting on behalf of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides in his absence, Acarkan recalled to everybody who avoided applying the same procedure in the pseudostate that a possible conciliation on the Cyprus issue can only be secured within the framework of political equality.

[03] NEW AIRPLANES BY THE "TURKISH CYPRIOT AIRLINES"

According to KIBRIS (6.3.96) the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airlines is to buy two more passenger airplanes, a Boing 727 and an Airbus A310.

KIBRIS reports that with these two airplanes the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airlines' fleet will have seven passenger air planes.

The paper further reports that the Boeing 727 will be bought from the Turkish Airlines with cash payment. The necessary agreement was signed on 1 March, 1996 in Izmir.

The A-310 will be bought from a private French Airlines Company. The necessary agreement with the French firm will be signed soon.

KIBRIS notes that with this new airplane it will be possible to export fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Airbus A-310 will be named Gecitkale (Kofinou). (MY)

[04] TURKEY SUGGESTS A TURKISH FIRM TO TAKE OVER POWER STATIONS IN THE PSEUDOSTATE

According to KIBRIS (6.3.96), in order to solve the chronic electricity problem of the occupied area, Turkey suggested that a private Turkish company should take over and run the existing power stations.

At a press conference, the so-called Turkish envoy Aydan Karahan, said that the Turkish Cypriots lack experience in running power stations and as a result Turkey has suggested that the Turkish Company STFA, which is an internationally known company having vast experience on the subject, should take over. KIBRIS reports that this is the first time that Turkey openly insists on handing over the power stations to STFA.

Karahan claimed that handing over the power stations to the STFA does not mean "privatization" nor "monopoly".

Present at the press conference, besides the STFA official, was Ambassador Salih Zeki Karaca, advisor to the Turkish Prime Minister's Office on Cyprus affairs.

[05] SYRIAN WHO STABBED HIS GREEK CYPRIOT WIFE STILL HELD IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

According to KIBRIS (6.3.96) the Syrian fugitive who stabbed his Greek Cypriot wife and then escaped to the occupied area, has been given eight more days remand order by the so-called Turkish Cypriot court.

On 19 February Aduan Suleyman stabbed his wife Theodora and then run away and entered into the occupied area near the Paphos Gate. (MY)
