The House of Representatives in its 9 January, 1996 decision ruled out any negotiations on sovereignty. (MY) [02] Denktash's contacts in PolandAccording to KIBRIS (28.2.96) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who is on a private visit to Poland, continued his contacts. After Warsaw, Denktash visited Krakow where he gave a lecture on the Cyprus problem to the Turkology students of the Krakow university. Denktash also gave an exclusive interview to the local TV station and then a press conference at the city's Cultural Centre. At the press conference Denktash repeated his known views and alleged that the international community should extend equal treatment to the Turkish Cypriots in the search for a solution to the problem. KIBRIS reports that some journalists attending the press conference, after listening to Denktash, said that they were unaware of the "facts" Denktash told them regarding the Cyprus problem. From Krakow Denktash went to Gdansk where he met former Solidarity leader and former President of Poland Leh Walessa. During the meeting Denktash invited Walessa to visit the occupied area. Walessa accepted the invitation and said that he would visit the occupied area in the future. Denktash last night attended a dinner attended by the Gdansk Mayor, the governor and other officials. KIBRIS also reports that today Denktash will return to Warsaw and will give a lecture at the Turkology faculty and will meet members of the Polish Parliament Foreign Relations Committee. In the evening he will attend a dinner given by the Rotary Club. (MY) |
