TURKISH CYPRIOT PRESS AND OTHER MEDIA (Cyprus PIO review) 96-02-22From: Panayiotis Zaphiris <pzaphiri@Glue.umd.edu>Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office DirectoryTURKISH PRESS AND OTHER MEDIANo. 35/96 22.2.96NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash: US particularly at fault for unsolvable problem[02] Turkish Cypriot party leaders on an ANAP-RP coalition in Turkey[01] Denktash: US particularly at fault for unsolvable problemAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 21.2.96), the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has alleged that the Cyprus problem can be resolved not by ignoring the Turkish Cypriots and accusing Turkey of occupying Cyprus but by reaching a lasting and balanced agreement. Denktash called on the Greek Cypriot leadership "to come to the negotiating table and on the United States, Britain, and the EU members to respect the principle of the supremacy of the law". Denktash also reiterated his proposal to sign a mutual nonaggression pact with the Greek Cypriots and to mutually withdraw the troops along close borders. In a statement to illegal Turkish Cypriot News Agency (TAK), Denktash claimed that nobody can change the following facts: Cyprus does not belong to the Greek Cypriots or the Greeks; Cyprus has two owners; one of those owners cannot become the government of the other; and 60 million Turks will not abandon the Turkish Cypriots. Denktash also claimed that all the governments in the world, particularly the United States and Britain, that have been treating the "bloodstained and racist Greek Cypriot Administration" like the legitimate government of Cyprus for the past 32 years carry great responsibility for the fact that the problem has become unsolvable. He then stressed that the need to incorporate in a double-based framework the Turkish Cypriots' separate community status and their political equality and sovereignty as cofounding partners-which were established by the 1960 agreements and were reconfirmed by the guarantees and alliance agreements - constitutes the basic principles which cannot be negotiated. [02] Turkish Cypriot party leaders on an ANAP-RP coalition in TurkeyKIBRIS (22.2.96) publishes the views of the Turkish Cypriot political party leaders regarding the possibility of a coalition between the Motherland Party (ANAP) of Mesut Yilmaz and the fundamentalist Prosperity Party (RP) of Necmettin Erbakan. The General Secretary of the Democratic Party (DP) Serdar Denktash has said that it does not make any difference to them as DP which party comes to power in Turkey. However, he added, it is a good thing that after a long time there will be a government in Turkey. He said that neither an ANAP-RP coalition nor any other coalition will change the relation between Turkey and the occupied area. He said that he does not think that the RP will try to affect social life in the occupied area. The Republican Turkish Party (RTP) leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, also said that the ANAP-RP coalition will not change social life in the occupied area. He added that in case the RP takes steps that will be against the interest of the Turkish Cypriots or the Cyprus problem or against the social life, then it will find the RTP standing up against it. He admitted that Turkey's foreign policy in its main lines will not change. In his turn, National Unity Party (NUP) General Secretary Erdal Onurhan has declared that they welcome an ANAP-RP coalition with due respect, adding that with this coalition Turkey's Cyprus policy will not undergo any drastic change. As for introducing the RP's fundamentalist ideologies into the occupied area, Communal Liberation Party leader Mustafa Akinci said that such a thing would create a series of great shocks within the Turkish Cypriot community. Referring to the Cyprus problem, Akinci said that if the ANAP-RP coalition follows the policy charted by the RP, then the Turkish Cypriot community will be greatly harmed and this will put the Greek Cypriot side's full membership into the EU on the agenda. In his turn National In his turn National Birth Party leader Enver Emin has declared that they do not consider the RP to be a danger as regards the Cyprus problem. He, too, stressed that Turkey's Cyprus policy will not undergo any changes. (MY) |
