TURKISH CYPRIOT PRESS AND OTHER MEDIA (Cyprus PIO review)From: Panayiotis Zaphiris <pzaphiri@Glue.umd.edu>Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office DirectoryTURKISH PRESSAND OTHER MEDIA30/96 14.2.96NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash's advisor claims Court of Justice decision is a political one.[02] Denktash repeats known allegations.[03] English Court prohibits the unloading of pseudostate's potatoes.No.30/96 14.2.96NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash's advisor claims Court of Justice decision is a political oneAccording to KIBRIS (14.2.96) Denktash's advisor and the Turkish Cypriot representative to the Autonomous Missing Persons Committee, Rustem Tatar, has alleged that contrary to the statement being made by EU Ambassador Anouil, the EU Court of Justice decision to ban "TRNC" exports to the EU member countries is a political decision. Mr. Anouil had stressed that the said decision by the EU Court of Justice was a legal decision, and not a political one. In a written statement Tatar says that he was one of the five-member Turkish Cypriot delegation which went to Brussels on 12 May 1977 and 19 November, 1980 to discuss Cyprus' association agreement with the then European Economic Community (EEC) and had a series of talks with the community officials on issues concerning Cyprus' association agreement and EEC's financial and technical assistance to be provided to the Turkish Cypriots, and the occupied area's exports to the member states. He says that a compromise solution was reached by which on the export papers nothing else but a stamp bearing the word "Custom's Authorities, Cyprus" should be stamped and that the Turkish Cypriots "dealing with the export papers" should write and sign their names only, nothing else. (MY) [02] Denktash repeats known allegationsAccording to KIBRIS (14.2.96) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has claimed that following the EU's decision to accept and put into process Cyprus' application for membership, the Greek Cypriots real intention has become more obvious. He repeated his allegations that "the Greek Cypriot side's main objective is to do away with the 1960 Agreement and the rights and powers acquired by Turkey over Cyprus, and eventually acquire the whole island." In a note sent to the so-called chairman of the pseudo-Assembly Ayhan Halit Acarkan, Denktash said that in the light of the current development "it became inevitable that the Turkish Cypriots should reassess the cause". Denktash further added that foreign diplomats who do not know the past have started considering the idea of an International Peace Force. "The aim is to water down the treaty of guarantees and render it useless", Denktash claimed. KIBRIS reports that in his note to Acarkan Denktash attached a copy of his article written in 11 June 1963 about his allegations that the Cyprus government wants to destroy the 1960 Agreements.
