[01] Turkish Cypriot unions protest the establishment of a Turkish trade union in the occupied area

In a joint statement 24 Turkish Cypriot trade unions strongly attack TURK-METAL trade union of Turkey, which tries to establish a new trade union federation in the occupied area.

The statement, published in KIBRIS (18.1.96), says that this attempt by TURK-METAL is unacceptable and the unions strongly protest it. The statement reads:

"We believe that, whatever the aim, the attempt to direct the working life in Cyprus by coming here from another country is unbecoming of trade union ethics, and is also against the situation prevailing in this country.

We declare that with every means available we will oppose this foreign intervation they are attempting through their economic strength. We call upon TURK-METAL trade union and say that it is inevitable that it must keep its hands away from Cyprus working life and from the Turkish Cypriot trade unions".

    It is signed by:

According to BIRLIK (18.1.96) the Union of Aegean Municipalities Executive Committee is holding its annual meeting in the occupied area.

Speaking during the opening session, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Izmir, Dr. Burhan Ozfatura, referred to the Cyprus problem and said: "Whether Turkey enters into Customs Union (with the EU) or enters into somewhere else, nothing will happen as regards its relations with the TRNC, and definitely the reality that this place is like a province of ours will not change at all".

For the Turkish Mayors went", on Ozfatura, "Cyprus is like one of the provinces of Turkey. That is, within the political framework a TRNC may exist here, but the people living here are no different than those living in Bursa, Balikesir, Buca or Konak", claimed Ozfatura. (MY)
