From there he started heading towards the free areas of the Republic. "Police" chased him and after shooting the tyres of the vehicle they were able to stop and arrest the driver, who is thought to be an unarmed Greek Cypriot. KIBRIS adds that the paper was unable to confirm the incident "officially" and get further details. Meanwhile, according to illegal Bayrak radio (13:30 hours, 17.11.95) the man who crossed into the occupied ara last night by car was caught wounded. He is Greek Cypriot Yiannis Apostolides, 22. Bayrak added that the occupation forces first thought that it was a UN car and did not stop him but later they opened fire at him and caught him wounded. He crossed into the occupied area driving a Mitsubishi Pajero (CAP428). Investigation about the case is continuing, says Bayrak, and Apostolides will be taken to court. (MY) [02] Denktash reiterates "call" for the signing of a non-aggression pactAccording to KIBRIS (17.11.95), the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, gave a dinner the other night in honour of Ismet Sezgin, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), General Cevik Bir, Second Chief of Staff of the Turkish Armed forces and the and the Secretary of the National Security Council, General Ilhan Kilic. Speaking during the dinner, Denktash once more reiterated his "call" to President Clerides for the signing a non-aggression pact between the two communities. Denktash further said that President Clerides should not "cry about" the demilitarization of the island but should agree to sign the non-aggression pact. In his turn, Ismet Sezgin reiterated Ankara's well-known stance saying that Turkey favours a just and lasting settlement in the island to be reached through free negotiations held under the auspices of the UN between the two communities of the island. As for the EU membership, Sezgin said that prior to a settlement in Cyprus a one-sided membership into the EU would lead to partition. "In that case, Turkey will not leave her brethren in Cyprus alone. The EU memebership and the Greco-Turkish balance in the region are closely related to each other. I would like to point out that people should know that we are carefully considering this balance", he said. Meanwhile, according to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 GMT, [16]11.95), Sezgin and the parliamentary delegation accompanying him concluded their contacts in the pseudostate and left the island today. They were seen off at occupied Tymbou airport by "Assembly Speaker" Ayhan Halit Acarkan, "Prime Minister" Hakki Atun, Lieutenant General Hasan Kundakci, commander of the Turkish occupation forces and others. Speaking at a news conference at the airport prior to his departure, Sezgin said that the pseudostate and the Turkish Cypriots are under Turkey's guarantees, that the final goal should be a bicommunal and bizonal federal state based on equality and that Turkey's effective guarantees, based on international agreements, will continue without being diluted, adding that any other alternative is unthinkable. (MY)[03] US Ambassador meets Denktash and AkinciAccording to KIBRIS (17.11.95) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a meeting yesterday with the US Ambassador to Cyprus Richard Boucher. Boucher earlier had a meeting with the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) leader Mustafa Akinci, during which they discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem. KIBRIS further reports that Boucher will meet the National Unity Party (NUP) leader Eroglu on Monday. (MY) [04] Denktash justifies violations of Cyprus' air spaceAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (12:00 hours, 17.11.95) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, commenting on President Clerides' statement on the Turkish airplanes' violation of the island's airspace, claimed that Turkey, a guarantor power as stipulated by the 1960 Agreements, has the right to fly over the air space of the free areas of the Republic.
