    [02] Tassos Finland

President of the republic Tassos Papadopoulos was officially welcomed in Finland today, by his counterpart Taria Halonen. There was a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, with members of the Finnish government taking part. The president of the republic, hepled Mrs Halonen for the warm welcome. She responded light heartedly, by expressing the hope that people should now believe the Finnish are warm people, despite of the cold climate. President Papadopoulos held two way talks with his Finnish counterpart, which were later extended to include a wider delegation from the two countries. According to our reporter in Finland, Yiannis Nikolaou, Turkey's accession course in light of the recent Commission report, is at the centre of discussions. Later today, the President of the republic will meet the mayor of Helsinki and lay a wreath at a memorial for those who died in the Second World War.

    [03] Chirac Turkey

French president Jacques Chirac assured the people that they will have the last word concerning Turkey's accession to the European Union. He did not rule out the possibility of France vetoing the accession at any stage of the negotiations. In an interview to France deux from Beijing, where he is currently on an official visit, President Chirac said that any stage of the procedure, France might withdraw or veto.

    [04] Turkey cabinet

Meanwhile in Turkey, the cabinet is convening today, under Prime minister Tayip Erdogan, to evaluate the European Commission's progress report. In its electronic edition, Turkish daily Milliyet, says that during the meeting, the cabinet will decide its strategy up to the December 17th EU summit, when a final decision will be taken.

    [05] Iraq bomb

A suicide car bomber attacked a U.S. military convoy in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul , causing several casualties.

The blast occurred in southern Mosul on the main highway leading into the city from the south.

No casualty figures were immediately available, but the witnesses said civilians and soldiers had been hit.

The bomb gouged a huge crater two metres deep in the road. U.S. soldiers opened fire after the attack.

Insurgents have frequently mounted attacks on U.S. forces in Mosul, 390 km north of Baghdad.

    [06] Sec Anan

UN Secretary General Kofi Anan today declare that the international organization must show it is tough enough to ensure the security of its members so that individual countries do not take measures into their own hands.

Speaking to Chinese university students in Beijing, Annan said fighting terrorism was best achieved through cooperation and information-sharing between states, not the use of force.

U.S. President George W. Bush questioned the relevance of the United Nations before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, saying Baghdad had flaunted U.N. authority for a decade.

In remarks at Beijing's Tsinghua University, Annan stopped short of repeating comments from an interview in September in which he said the 15-member Security Council should have approved the invasion of Iraq in mid-March 2003.

    [07] Afghan wrap

Afghan officials delayed counting ballots today after the historic presidential election to deal with complaints of fraud, but several candidates appeared to be pulling back from an initial decision to reject the vote.

Saturday's poll was the first time the impoverished, war-torn Islamic nation had voted for a president and it took place despite sabotage threats by fundamentalist Taliban insurgents.

Millions participated enthusiastically, but the poll ended in confusion when all 15 challengers to President Hamid Karzai announced a boycott, saying a system to prevent illegal multiple voting had failed.

However, many of them were reportedly willing to drop the boycott call and let the Joint Election Management Body decide on their complaints, implicitly agreeing that they would accept its decision and the poll result.

    [08] Reeve death

"Superman" actor Christopher Reeve, paralyzed when he fell from a horse nine years ago, has died in a New York hospital of heart failure.

    He was 52.

Reeve went into a coma on Saturday when he suffered a heart attack during treatment for an infected pressure wound and died in Northern Westchester Hospital yesterday afternoon without regaining consciousness.

His wife Dana issued a statement thanking "the millions of fans around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."

Reeve, confined to a wheelchair since his riding accident in 1995, had in recent years campaigned for the rights of the disabled and for stepped-up research into the treatment of spinal cord injuries.

Reeve's family asked that donations be made in his honor to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, formed in 1999 to boost collaboration between experts working on treatments for spinal cord damage.

He began his acting career in summer stock and appeared on the television soap opera "Love of Life" while still in college.

Despite his theatre credentials and work on television, Reeve is best known as the hero of the "Superman" films.

He was a virtual unknown when he was chosen from 200 candidates to become the big screen's incarnation of 1978's "Superman," in which he played fumbling Clark Kent who at will turns into the flying superhero
