[02] Tassos PapadopoulosPresident Tassos Papadopoulos will address the nation tomorrow evening to plead his case either for, or against the Annan plan.The televised address will be broadcast live at 9:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm as previously announced. The President's word is crucial to shaping public opinion on the UN blueprint. President Papadopoulos has said he will explain his argument either for or against the plan in detail so that citizens can make an informed decision in the April 24 referendum. [03] Nicos KatsouridesAkel Parliamentary spokesman Nicos Katsourides said all parties must work together to implement the people's decision, whatever that may be at the April 24 referendum.Speaking on CyBC, Mr. Katsourides said whatever the people's choice, hard work will be needed to counter the different problems that may arise. He added that unity is paramount if this is to be achieved. Referring to Akel's position on the Annan plan, Mr. Katsourides said the positives and negatives of the document will be assessed and the best interests of the people taken into account. [04] Socrates HasikosDisy deputy leader Socrates Hasikos said there's too much disinformation and propaganda surrounding the Annan plan when it comes to security issues.He said Disy chiefs will exchange views tomorrow on the plus and minuses of the plan. Asked about clashing opinions about the UN document within the party, Mr. Hasikos said this isn't unrelated with the propaganda campaign on the plan. He said party members will get a clearer picture after tomorrow's meeting. Mr. Hasikos also said that former Cyprus President and Disy founder Glafcos Clerides will state his case either for or against the plan with the party holds its national meeting next week. [05] Paphos BishopAnswering critics that the Cyprus Church appears to be following the crowd on political developments, Paphos Bishop Chrysostomos said the Church always leads the way and never lags behind.Speaking on CyBC, the Bishop described the plan as catastrophic and suggested that only those who listen to foreign officials will vote yest in the referendum. He added that those heeding the call of their country will turn down the Annan plan. The Bishop also said that the Church is willing to offer a sizeable portion of its finances to setting up a refugee compensation fund in case the no vote prevails. [06] Yiannis ValinakisGreek deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Valinakis is in Cyprus for a round of contacts with the island's political leaders.Mr. Valinakis is accompanied by ruling party New Democracy General Secretary Evangelos Meimerakis. The purpose of the trip is for Mr. Valinakis to be briefed on the views of political leaders on the outcome of the Burgenstock talks, as well as the upcoming referendum. Mr. Valinakis will meet with President Papadopouloss at 4:00 pm today, followed by talks with the leaders of all parties. [07] Petros MolyviatisBritish High Commissioner in Athens David Madden expressed London's hope that both sides on Cyprus vote "yes" in the April 24 referendums.Mr. Madden conveyed London's hopes to Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis. Speaking after a meeting with the Greek official, Mr. Madden said the decision rests solely with Cypriots and expressed the hope of a reunified Cyprus entering the EU. [08] Iraq fightingAbout 15 Iraqi civilians and Iraqi soldiers were killed in clashes between Italian troops and Shi'ite militiamen in the southern town of Nassiriya.Italy's news agensy Ansa quoted a spokeswoman for the Coalition Provisional Authority as saying the number was an estimate and that isolated clashes were continuing. Italian officials said 12 Italian soldiers were injured in the shootings, none seriously. Meanwhile, heavy fighting erupted today between U.S. troops and Iraqi guerrillas on the edge of Falluja, an anti-American hotbed west of Baghdad. Witnesses said they could see clashes on the highway just north of Falluja. U.S. Marines vowed to pacify Falluja after four American security contractors were killed there last week. [09] Iran nuclearMohammed elBaradei, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, said Iran had agreed to accelerate cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.Mr. elBaradei made the remark after Iran's nuclear chief said his government would suspend making and assembling atomic equipment, but wanted the Agency close its case by June. Tehran's nuclear chief also said Iran would suspend nuclear equipment manufacture and assembly from April 9. The United States accuses Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons programme, but Tehran says its nuclear ambitions are confined to generating electricity. [10] Cyprus AirwaysCyprus Airways management are offering cut-rate prices on flights to Greece and other European destinations to celebrate the island's formal entry into the EU.Cyprus Airways Chairman Constantinos Loizides told a news conference that the offers take effect May 1st and will last until the 15th of the month. He said 25 seats on each flight to Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion will be offered at 25 pounds one way and 50 pounds return. There will also be a 25 pound discount for other European destinations. And on April 30, 25 free first class tickets will be drawn from among the company's most frequent flyers. [11] Markos KyprianouTaxpayers will be able to file their income tax return through the Internet.Unveiling his ministry's new, online service, Finance Minister Markos Kyprianou said taxpayers will benefit mainly by saving time. He told a news conference that cutting red tape and serving the public are top priorities for his ministry. According to Interior Ministry officials, taxpayers interested to sign up to the online system need to fill in an application form and submit it personally with a photocopy of his, or her ID card. [12] Iranian beatingLimassol police are looking for four Iranian youths accused of abducting and beating a 14-year-old Iranian girl in an apparent act of revenge.The girl told police the Iranian youths abducted her at around 7:00 pm on Sunday as she was trying to cross a street near her home. She said her abuctors blindfolded her, bundled her in a car and drover her to a remote location where they slapped her demanding to know where her mother and stepfather where. The girl said her assailants blamed her mother for the beating because she didn't help them when she was working at the International Amnesty Office in Nicosia two years ago. [13] Dog attackA 13-year-old girl is recovering in hospital from a gash in her left shin after a dog attack.Kyriaki Markidou was rushed to Limassol Hospital after suffering the deep cut from the dog bite. The teen was on her way to her Limassol home, taking a shortcut through a field when the dog pounced on her. The dog had been tied down at the time of the attack and the owner has a proper license for the pet. Warning signs were also posted around the dog. The owner was charged and released. [14] WeatherMainly fine this afternoon with light to moderate winds from northeasterly to southeasterly directions, force 3 to 4.Seas will be slight with temperatures reaching 20 degrees inland and the south coast, 19 on the west coast and 12 in the highest mountains. Fine conditions will carry through tonight with light, northwesterly winds, force 2 to 3, and slight seas. Temperatures will drop to 8 degrees inland, 10 on the coasts and 4 in the highest mountains.
