    [02] Pap Robles

President Papadopoulos today held talks with the Commissioner for Human Rights at the European Council, Alvaro Gil Robles. Following the meeting, Mr Robles said that he received detailed briefing on all aspects of human rights issues, but he did not disclose any details. The briefing, he added, has given him a complete view of things, that will be of great help in the drawing up of his report. Asked if the crucial issue discussed, was the continuous violation of human rights by the Turkish occupation army, Mr Robles did not disclose the content of his talks, but noted however that he will come to a conclusion on violations on human rights about everyone, wherever they live.

    [03] Euro ready

Six months prior to full European Union membership, Cyprus will be ready to respond to all the commitments stemming from the signature of the Accession Treaty. The coordinator of accession Takis Hadjidimitriou appeared certain that Cyprus would achieve this goal, following an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet yesterday afternoon, chaired by President Papadopoulos. Mr Hadjidimitriou said that Cyprus is no longer behind regarding its harmonisation with the acquis communitaire. If, he added, some ground had been lost in the past, now it has been regained and Cyprus is in the frontline of countries that have completed important aspects of harmonisation. Meanwhile, the head of the EU negotiating team with Cyprus Leopold Maurer, said that the report on the progress of Cyprus, due to be completed in November, will be a very positive one.

    [04] Turkey entry

The Turkish military want European Union accession but in a way that does not affect the nature of the Turkish state. According to a Reuters correspondent in Turkey, the all powerful National Security Council called on the Erdogan government to make every possible effort for accession. However in a statement, the Council stressed that the accession has to done in a way consistent with the political characteristic of the Turkish republic. However, Reuters noted that given the package of reforms that have to be pushed through, the military establishments' power has to be diminished, particularly in bodies such as the National Security Council.

    [05] Mideast

Israel killed three Palestinian militants and a civilian bystander in an attempt to capture a master Hamas bomb-maker, a further blow to efforts to prop up a collapsing "road map" peace plan.

The United States, which unveiled the road map three weeks ago, said yesterday a truce by militants would not be enough to bolster the plan.

It also urged European Union and Arab countries to cut off support for political wing of the militant Hamas movement which has orchestrated a number of suicide bombings in Israel.

But Palestinian officials said U.S. calls to disarm the popular militants could provoke civil war, while Israel has vowed to keep pursuing them, complicating efforts to forge a ceasefire.

Witnesses said Israeli troops swept into the village of Mughraqa in the central Gaza Strip before dawn on Friday and surrounded the family home of Hamas explosives expert Adnan al-Ghul, precipitating a clash.

They said three helicopter gunships accompanied by 15 tanks fired into the area, killing a brother and son of al-Ghul who were also Hamas members, and an operative of the allied Islamic Jihad militant faction.

    [06] Sweden Plavsic

Sweden has agreed to house in one of its jails convicted war criminal and former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic, once dubbed Bosnia's "Iron Lady".

Sweden was responding to a request by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for a country to provide jail space for Plavsic after the tribunal sentenced her to 11 years in prison.

The 72-year-old Plavsic was convicted in February for a crime against humanity, but a decision on where to house her had until now not yet been made by the court.

She is the single most senior politician to be sentenced by the Hague tribunal.

About 200 thousand people are estimated to have been killed or went missing in the conflict.

    [07] Foe shock

Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe died last night after collapsing during his country's Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia.

Foe, who spent last season on loan at English premier league Manchester City from French club Olympique Lyon, was carried off on a stretcher after collapsing towards the end of the match, won 1-0 by Cameroon.

FIFA, who said there would be an autopsy to determine the circumstances of the death, later issued a statement saying Foe had "collapsed to the ground in the second half, around the 72nd minute, for no apparent reason.

The player was still alive when he was taken to the medical centre in Gerland Stadium in Lyon, where he died. Doctors performed cardiac resuscitation for 45 minutes without success."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter expressed his shock and sadness at Foe's death.

Cameroon will play in the final of the Confederations Cup against France on Sunday despite Foe's death.

    [08] Tailer

An adulterous Finn pressed all the wrong buttons as he made love in a car, unknowingly prompting his mobile phone to call home just in time for his wife to hear him moan "I love you", but to his mistress.

The wife, doubly enraged after hearing the voice of her friend in the background, has been convicted of assault after going to her rival's flat and striking her in the face and later attacking her husband at home with an axe, though he fended off the blow.

A court official told Reuters she received a 14-month suspended sentence for the attacks which did not result in serious injury.

The woman told the court this week in Lahti, 100 kilometers north of the capital Helsinki, that she was temporarily in shock and had only tried to scare her husband.

According to a regional paper they have since divorced.
