    [02] Greece Euroarmy

EU foreign ministers are meeting today in Brussels with the issue of the Euroarmy expected to top the agenda of their discussions.

Greece seems determined to stop in its tracks, a formula agreed by Britain, the United States and Turkey, that satisfies Ankara's reservations about NATO-EU cooperation regarding the operational authority of the Euroarmy.

Greek foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou will be the only representative to express reservations, therefore averting a final decision.

According to diplomatic sources from Athens, the issue will be referred to the European Council meeting at Laken, if necessary.

The clause in the agreement that meets with Greek opposition is one that rules out military intervention in conflicts between EU members and NATO Allies.

This clause is directly connected with Greco-Turkish differences over the continental shelf of the Aegean and the Cyprus problem.

    [03] Cem Euroarmy

Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem expressed satisfaction over the formula agreed with Britain and the United States regarding the Euroarmy.

Cem said that formula guarantees hia country's safety, but also noted that Turkey couldn't have its own way, as far as the autonomous Euroarmy operations are concerned.

    [04] Yeorgiou trial

Sixty eight year old Andreas Yeorgiou from Pyrgos Tyllerias will be tried on the 22nd of April, regarding his alleged involvement in illegal transfers of land at the Tylleria area.

Along with Kato Pyrgos community council president Krinos Theocharous and land registry official Michalis Kalathas they are charged with 14 offences concerning conspiracy to commit a crime, issuing of false title deeds and abuse of power.

Yeorgiou was released till the trial, on a fifty thousand pound bail, because of ill health.

He also handed over his passport and has been placed on the stop list.

    [05] Denktash Cyprus

Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is up to his old antics again, directing criticism both at the European Union and the Greek Cypriot side, claiming that President Clerides does not really want to achieve a solution.

Referring to the decision for a resumption of talks, Denktash claimed that no pressure was applied to the Greek-cypriot side

They consented, he added, after receiving irresponsible, as he said, assurances by the European Union, that the Cyprus republic will join the EU, even with a settlement.

    [06] Cem Cyprus

The Turkish foreign minister last night saw fit to clarify what he meant by recent statements to the effect that Turkey will have to make decisions regarding Cyprus, that might bear a heavy cost.

Ismail Cem said that he did not mean that Turkey wouldn't join the European. Instead he harked back to 1974, when an arms purchase embargo was imposed on his country.

Cem threatened that Turkey will not allow the Greek-cypriot side to join the European Union as a soverign state, denoting Turkish cypriots, as he claimed, to a mere minority.

    [07] Armed robbery

An armed man robbed the Ayios Athanasios cooperative in broad daylight, getting away with five thousand pounds.

According to our reporter in Limassol, around nine thirty this morning, the hooded man entered the cooperative, and at gunpoint, he secured the cash and made his escape with a scooter, that was later found at some distance from the cooperative.

Police have launched a manhunt for his arrest.

Only one client was inside the cooperative, at the time of the robbery and along with staff, gave a description of the perpetrator, as well as details of his moves, both before and after the robbery.

The thief is described as a young man, wearing chaki overalls.

    [08] Bin Laden Wrap

Osama bin Laden's forces fought on in eastern Afghan mountains, despite pulverising U.S. air strikes.

In the south, 30 U.S. tanks backed by helicopters left a desert airstrip towards the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar

A U.S. "soldier" was seen on the roof of the former compound of the Taliban's fugitive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar.

The Taliban surrendered Kandahar, their last stronghold, on Friday under siege from tribal fighters backed by U.S. air power and Marines dug in at a desert airstrip near the city.

Kandahar was calmer today after rival tribal leaders decided who should control the city, but there was still no word on the fate of Omar, who had kept his headquarters there even after his Islamic militia captured Kabul in 1996.

Afghanistan's designated interim prime minister, Hamid Karzai, reiterated that he wanted the one-eyed Taliban chief found and brought to justice as a "criminal".

A spokesman for the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance has said that bin Laden was now leading the defence of his mountain hideouts in person, with about one thousand al Qaeda fighters.

Bin Laden, appeared more isolated than ever after the Taliban gave up the last province under their control.

    [09] Mideast wrap

The United States piled more pressure on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to rein in militants after another suicide bombing rocked Israel and a U.S. peace envoy grew impatient with a mission marred by violence.

Palestinian officials say Israeli bombardments and incursions into Palestinian territory are making the crackdown Arafat has promised more difficult.

Israeli sources said that U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni had shown signs of impatience during a meeting on Sunday at a lack of progress toward a ceasefire.

US vice president Dick Cheney told NBC television there was no question Arafat's actions had set back the cause of Palestinian statehood.

Palestinian officials have said Arafat must show the Palestinian public some political gains if he is to carry out an unpopular move against militants. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has repeatedly refused to negotiate under fire.

    [10] Bloomberg Mideast

New York Mayor-elect Michael Bloomberg likened Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to Osama bin Laden during a visit to Israel, calling them both terrorists.

Palestinian officials responded angrily, calling Bloomberg a mafioso.

Bloomberg, on a solidarity visit to Israel after Palestinian suicide bombings, was asked in an interview broadcast on Israel Army radio.

Asked to comment on Bloomberg's remarks, Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said that he should consult with the mafia, the mafia that had elected him.

    [11] Cse today

It was a bad start to the week for the Cyprus stock exchange.

The All Shares Price Index closed at 137 point 88 units, a drop of almost two percent.

Volume of trading reached a mere five point three million pounds.

    [12] Turner Prize

With a defiant swearing cry, pop superstar Madonna las night presented one of the world's most famous art prizes to conceptual artist Martin Creed for his controversial creation of a bare room with a light that switches on and off.

The pop diva, herself no stranger to controversy, decided to swear live on British television, prompting Channel Four to issue a speedy apology to its viewers for her "strong language".

To win the 20 thousand pound Turner Prize, 33 year old Creed fought off competition from a video about two gay cowboys, a dusty storeroom piled high with junk and a film of a dishevelled alcoholic being brought a cup of tea by his wife.

The Turner Prize, won in the past by an elephant dung painting and pickled animal carcasses, invariably stirs controversy, receives a critical battering and attracts up to 100 thousand people annually to London's Tate Britain museum.

The choice of Creed, enraged traditionalists who condemn the Turner as a national joke which makes a mockery of modern art.
