    A 33-year-old Iranian woman is apprehended at Larnaka airport for drug-trafficking, while flights to and from Athens are affected following a strike in Greece;

    and...

Is she or isn't she? Doubt is cast over the sex of the French contender in this year's Miss Universe beauty pageant.

    [02] tsiakourmas

Greek-Cypriot building contractor Panikos Tsiakourmas was today set free by a Turkish-Cypriot court convening in occupied Famagusta, but not in time to see his 80-year-old mother alive, who died just a few hours earlier at Larnaka General Hospital where she was being treated after suffering a stroke.

Panikos, who at the latest report, was still being transferred to the government-controlled areas of the Republic in a British High Commission vehicle, has not, to date, been informed of his mother's death.

The occupied regime court had passed down a six-month sentence on Panikos, but given what was termed as his "good conduct" during the process, it was decided to release him.

Panikos Tsiakourmas is expected to arrive at the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia any time now.

    [03] enclaved attack

An 80-year-old enclaved Greek-Cypriot woman living in the occupied Karpass peninsula village of Rizokarpaso was two nights ago the victim of abuse at the hands of two Turkish soldiers.

Speaking to our station, Cyprus' Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Takis Christopoulos, said that according to information made available to him, the two deprived Smaragda Vasili of 15 pounds in her possession and left, threatening that they would return in a few days to take her pension money which she would have received by then. On leaving, the two also cut her telephone and electricity lines.

The incident came to the fore after Vasili herself reported it to the occupation regime's authorities and identified her attackers in a police line-up. Following interrogation, the two admitted to two other previous robberies of Greek-Cypriot enclaved, as well as a beating-up, last week, of yet another old woman living in the Karpass.

All cases have been reported to the United Nations Force in Cyprus, with the demand that measures be taken to prevent similar incidents from occuring.

    [04] vedrine arr

French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine is arriving on the island this evening on a 2-day official visit.

His itinerary includes a dinner hosted in his honour by Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides tonight, while tomorrow the French Foreign Minister will be recieved by President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides and also have talks with his Cypriot counterpart. The talks are expected to focus on the Cyprus Issue in general and the island's EU-accession course.

In a relevant announcement, a spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry that the Vedrine visit will permit the further tightening of the traditionally excellent bilateral relations between France and an EU candidate-state for which negotiations are proceeding apace. The spokesperson added that Hubert Vedrine plans to reiterate France's support to a just and lasting Cyprus settlement, always within the framework set by the United Nations and in line with Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 12-51.

    [05] tox-ver

The Toxotis-Vergina two-day air-and-sea military exercise, carried out in tandem by the Greek Armed Forces and Cyprus' National Guard, ended today with the realisation of a search-and-rescue operation off the southwestern coast of the island.

During yesterday's phase of the exercise, which is being held within the framework of the Greece-Cyprus United Defence Dogma, four Hellenic Airforce F-16 jet fighters flew over the government-controlled areas of the Republic carrying out mock attacks against specially set-up targets.

Yesterday meanwhile, six Turkish military aircraft violated both the Nicosia and Athens Flight Information Regions, without however coming in contact with the Greek planes.

And while the Toxotis-Vergina exercise was still in progress, the Turkish military announced that they it has reserved specific sectors for the holding of aeronautical manoeuvres over the occupied areas of the Republic. The unilateral binding of the sectors, within the Nicosia Flight Information Region, is contrary to the provisions of international law.

    [06] turkey titina

Turkey appears to have no intention whatsoever of complying with the European Court of Human Rights decision ordering her to recompense Greek-Cypriot Titina Loizidou for loss of access to personal property in occupied Kyrenia.

The statement was made to the Turkish-Cypriot "Kibris" newspaper by Turkish Foreign Ministry official Yunus Belet, who cited political reasons for Ankara's stance, saying that the implementation of the European Court's decision would be tantamount to an abandonment of the policy adopted by Turkey for years now.

    [07] iranian heroin

An Iranian woman was apprehended on arrival at Larnaka airport yesterday on suspicion of drug-trafficking.

Following radiological examinations at Larnaka General, it was ascertained that the woman had indeed ingested a number of capsules enclosing an undetermined substance.

The 33-year-old woman had, at the time of us going on air, passed out 15 capsules, which, upon examination, were ascertained to contain heroin with a net weight of 60 grammes.

    [08] gr strike air

Commercial flights between Cyprus and Greece have been temporarily affected by industrial action being taken by the Greek Workers' Confederation.

As a consequence of the strike, both Cyprus and Olympic Airways will only realise one flight each today.

The two Cyprus Airways morning flights to Athens have been scrapped, while the 4pm one will be realised as scheduled and the 7:50pm will be delayed by three hours.

At the same time, the Athens to Larnaka Olympic Airways morning flights have been cancelled, with only the 9:25 pm one being realised.

Cyprus Airways Press Spokesman Tassos Angeli has told our station that alternative arrangements have been made to fully cater for travellers affected by the industrial action in Greece.

    [09] CSE

The Cyprus Stock Exchange today continued sending out optimistic messages, with the All-Share Index climbing by 2.57%, closing at 194.20.

At the same time, the overall volume of trading broke a record high for this week, reaching 19 million 134 thousand pounds.

    [10] TAILER

In today's tailer, a look at the ins and outs of international beauty pageants, with doubts being cast over the sex of the French contender for the Miss Universe title.

On Tuesday, and echoing rumours spread worldwide over the Internet, the New York Daily News wrote that organisers were checking whether 20-year-old nursing student Elodie Gossuin had been born a man.

Commenting on the matter, Miss Universe spokeswoman Mary Hilliard McMillan stressed that according to regulations, "all delegates must be natural-born females." McMillan added that if the contender does, in the end, turn out to be or have been a man, "she will be put on the first plane back to France."

Defending her charge, the head of the Miss France committee, Genevieve de Fontenay, was quoted by Reuters as saying "Elodie Gossuin is a perfectly normal young lady. She will be a candidate for Miss Universe like all the others, and that's it."

The male journalist interviewing Fontenay also had no doubts about Gossuin's sex, telling listeners that they only had to look at her photograph -- plastered all over the Paris Metro in an advertisement for a television magazine as well as being posted on the Internet -- to be convinced.
