[01] President palPresident of the Republic Glafkos Clerides this morning met with both House President Spyros Kyprianou and Social-Democrats Chairman Vassos Lyssarides.On leaving the Presidential Palace, House President Kyprianou said that the meeting was essentially in the form of a briefing on the overall situation concerning the Cyprus Issue, given that he will be assuming duties as Acting President of the Republic during President Clerides' private trip to Egypt and along the Nile. On his part, Dr Lyssarides noted that he drew the President of the Republic's attention to the fact that Turkey's EU-harmonisation programme does not in any way provide for any obligations to be undertaken by the candidate-state, as these are specified in the EU Helsinki summit decision. [02] denk ankaraTurkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is on a visit to Ankara for contacts with Turkish government officials.According to an announcement issued by his office, Mr Denktash is to brief the Turkish government on the continuing economic crisis plaguing the occupied areas of the Republic. The Turkish-Cypriot leader is also expected to request more financial support from Ankara in order for his regime to deal with the problems created by the situation. [03] austrian contactsAustrian Foreign Minister Benita Waltner, on an official visit to the island, this morning met with President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides and sicussed the Cyprus Issue in general, as well as the island's EU-accession course.No statements were made after the meeting, following which Ms Waltner met with House President Spyros Kyprianou and then crossed over into the occupied part of Nicosia for talks with Rauf Denktash. The Austrian Foreign Minister has since returned to the government-controlled territories and was, at the latest report, still in a meeting with Foreign Minister Kasoulides. A joint press conference has been called for after the Kasoulides-Waltner meeting. [04] turkey military cutsTurkey's powerful military announced yesterday that it had postponed 32 spending projects worth 19.5 billion dollars in an effort to ease a financial crisis that has slashed the lira's value by almost a half.The decision to delay the plans follows a Greek move to postpone the purchase of 60 Typhoon fighter jets from the Eurofighter consortium, while Greece and Turkey recently also agreed to remove landmines on either side of the Evros river border. [05] secombe obitWelsh tenor and comic genius Harry Secombe, who brought music as well as laughter to the lives of many, died yesterday at the age of 79 following a long history of diabetes and a recent battle with prostate cancer.Harry Donald Secombe was born in Swansea in 1921, the son of a commercial salesman. He grew up in an atmosphere of music and comedy -- his parents had first met at a church concert in which his mother was singing a solo and his father was reciting a comedy monologue. His portly figure lent itself to the film portrayal of various Dickensian figures, including the "Oliver Twist" character of Mr Bumble, the parish beadle whom the young waif dared ask for more food in the film of that title. Secombe was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1981 for his services to show-business and charity. A rotund 226 lb or 102.5 kg, he suggested the Queen should dub him.... "Sir Cumference". [06] spy plane crewThe freed crew of a US spy plane headed for home and Easter reunions with their families today, in a development defusing a Sino-American standoff over their detention in China.The deal which brought the release however left the spy plane itself in Chinese hands, as well as a host of unresolved issues between the two sides, with the main one being the future of American surveillance flights off China's coast. The United States and China agreed to meet this coming Wednesday to discuss the April 1st mid-air collision which led to the incident. Also on the agenda will be the fate of the EP-3 spy plane, which is too badly damaged to take off without repairs. [07] euthanasiaThe Netherlands yesterday became the first country in the world to legalise euthanasia, after its Senate defied thousands of protesters to vote in favour of mercy killing.The 75-seat chamber voted 46 to 28 in favour of the law, recognising a practice that has been tolerated in the Netherlands for over two decades. One member was not present. Health Minister Els Borst applauded what she described as "a very careful decision", saying it reflected the view of almost 90% of the Dutch population that doctors should not be prosecuted for following a patient's wishes. Doctors however will still face prosecution if they fail to follow strict rules. The new law insists that adult patients must have made a voluntary, well-considered and lasting request to die; that they must face a future of unbearable suffering and that there must be no reasonable alternative; and that a second doctor must be consulted and life must be ended in a medically appropriate way.
