  • [01] MICHOS STATEMENTS

Government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stated today that the Cyprus issue is on the permanent agenda of discussions held at the all-powerful Turkish National Security Council.

Mr Papapetrou expressed the hope that Turkey will alter its intransigent stance and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will attend the proximity talks, as this is the only way to achieve a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The government spokesman stressed that the Cyprus government is looking forward to this dialogue and is keeping up a positive stance, unless it becomes necessary to alter its position.

    [02] TURKEY DEFENCE

Turkish defence Minister Sabahattin Tsakmakoglou blatantly claimed today that the Greek-Cypriot side, as he called the Cyprus republic, cannot unilaterally join international organisations, obviously referring to the European Union.

The Turkish minister who arrived on the occupied northern part of the island to observe the military exercise "Taurus 2000" claimed that the turkish invasion of 1974 brought peace on the island.

Furthermore, he reiterated the unacceptable Turkish position, that two sovereign and independent peoples live on the island.

He asked of the international community to recognise the illegal pseudostate and stop supporting artificial solutions, meaning a federation.

    [03] PRODI CYPRUS

The European Commission assured Cyprus that its policy remains unaltered regarding entry negotiations with the island.

In light of recent statements by Commission President Romano Prodi, linking Cyprus entry with the solution of the Cyprus issue, a Commission spokesman categorically stated that there is no deviation from the Helsinki decisions and that this was clearly shown in negotiations regarding the Euro-Turkish accession partnership.

In statements to the CyBC correspondent in Brussels, the spokesman clarified that Romano Prodi was not referring to any legal terminology but his remarks were based on simple logic, meaning that if a country with a political problem enters the Union, this will create problems.

Meanwhile, the Cyprus permanent representative in Brussels will meet Romano Prodi in the next few days to ask for further clarification.

    [04] EU CYPRUS

A European Commission report on ther EU candidate countries economic record, gives Cyprus top spot in many vital areas, such as employment and public finances.

However, for next year, it predicts a small reduction in the development level, which will pick up in 2002 with Cyprus Gross National Product increasing by three point eight percent.

The report predicts that all economic indexes in Cyprus will improve in the next two years.

    [05] CSE IMC!

The move to the IMC building had no positive effect on the fortunes of the struggling Cyprus Stock Exchange.

Today's meeting, the first held in the new surroundings, after a three-day break, saw the price index lose a further one-percent, closing at 261 units.

Trading reached 11 point three million pounds.

In statements to CyBC Stock Exhange programme, DISY deputy Lefteris Christoforou called on those involved to support the CSE, because a possible crash, would have catastrophic effects for the island's economy.

Meanwhile, Bank of Cyprius and the Popular Bank have announced the giving away of free stocks to shareholders.

    [06] US ELECTIONS

Lawyers for Democrat Al Gore today prepared arguments for the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts about disputed presidential votes as the battle for the White House intensified even as most Americans took a day off for Thanksgiving.

Racing against a Sunday deadline for manual recounts that could finally decide the Nov. 7 presidential election, Democrats vowed to challenge a state appeals court ruling late last night that upheld a decision by Miami-Dade County, Florida's most populous, to abandon plans to count votes by hand.

Gore's legal team also scrambled to prepare briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court after Republican George W. Bush asked the nation's highest court to intervene in one of the closest and most contested White House races in history.

Gore was backing on picking up enough votes in Miami-Dade and two other Democratic-leaning counties in south Florida -- Broward and Palm Beach -- to overtake Bush's 930-vote lead in the state and clinch the presidency.

Election officials in Broward had nearly completed their hand count, giving Gore an "apparent" net gain of 137 votes, but were due to meet this morning, local time, to review some 2,000 contested ballots.

Meanwhile, Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney remained in hospital today after suffering what doctors described as a "very slight" heart attack.

    [07] MAD COWS!

U.S. consumers do not share Europe's "hysteria" over mad cow disease because as the government claims, it has an effective regulatory system.

The European Union is struggling to rebuild consumer confidence in Europe's beef after fresh outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease in France and Spain.

BSE's human form, known as new variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease, has killed more than 80 people in Britain and two in France.

There is no known cure for the deadly disease that wastes away the brain. Spain reported its first case of the disease yesterday.

Although no cases of BSE or mad cow disease have ever been found in the United States, four Vermont sheep in July tested positive for a disease related to BSE.

    [08] TAILER

A study on the sex habits of Germans found that supporters of the Greens Party are in love with more than just the environment.

The survey found the Greens were by far the most active in bed as well, a finding that put smiles on the faces of party leaders surveyed by Reuters.

Green party backers embraced each other as much as ecology: 71 percent had sex at least weekly.

On contraire, The Cold War continues for supporters of the post-communist Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). A mere 40 percent of PDS voters said they had weekly sex.

    [09] WEATHER

This afternoon it will be cloudy with rain and thunderstorms expected in some areas.

Winds will be light to moderate northwesterly to southwesterly, three to four beaufort and the sea will be slightly moderate.

Tonight, local cloud is expexted to bring rain mainly on the coast.

Winds will be light northwesterly to northeasterly and the sea will be slightly moderate.
