    [02] TALKS

The fifth round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem begins this afternoon in Geneva, without any prospects for progress, due to the insistence of the Turkish side on a confederation solution.

The separate meetings of UN Special Adviser Alvaro de Soto with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash begin this afternoon, but details have not yet been known.

The programme of the talks will be announced today at a press conference by Mr. de Soto.

CyBC reporter in Geneva, Costas Gennaris, said that the Peruvian diplomat has already worked out a schedule for the talks.

Mr. de Soto has been in Geneva since Saturday, after his visit to Cyprus.

Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus Sir David Hannay, US Presidential Emissary Alfred Moses, US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston and US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler are all in Geneva for the talks.

This morning, President Clerides had a working breakfast with Sir David.

    [03] HASIKOS

Minister of Defence, Socratis Hasikos, has said that preparations for Cyprus' inclusion in the European Army are continuing.

Mr. Hasikos will participate in a meeting to take place in Brussels on November 21, during which a decision will be taken to set up the army.

Speaking last night at an event in the village of Athienou, Mr. Hasikos said that he would submit Cyprus' contribution to the army at the Brussels meeting.

    [04] STOCK

The Cyprus Stock Exchange All Share Index dropped further today, closing at 290,26 units, recording losses of 1,14 percent compared to yesterday's meeting.

Traded value reached 14 million 800 thousand pounds, about 10 million pounds less than yesterday.

    [05] MIDEAST

A Palestinian youth was killed during clashes with Israeli soldiers near the Israel-Gaza border today, raising tensions in the Gaza Strip ahead of funerals for four Palestinians shot dead a day earlier.

The death the 17-year-old raised to at least 155 the number of people killed in nearly five weeks of violence. Most of the dead are Palestinians.

Hospital officials in Gaza said Israeli soldiers killed the youth during clashes with stone-throwers at the Karni commercial crossing on the Israel-Gaza border. They said five people were wounded.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said the military was not sure how the youth was killed but it may have been during an incident when Palestinian gunmen opened fire at Israeli soldiers patrolling the area.

Thousands of Palestinians gathered at a mosque in Gaza City for the funerals of four Palestinians killed in clashes involving gunfire at Karni yesterday.

Another Palestinian killed in clashes near the West Bank town of Ramallah yesterday, is also due to be buried later today.

The army said Palestinians opened fire at Israeli military positions and settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip overnight. It said an Israeli ambulance was shot at and the driver was lightly wounded.

    [06] IRELAND

A booby-trapped bomb exploded at a Northern Ireland police station overnight, officials said, seriously injuring one officer in an attack that follows a string of incidents blamed on dissident guerrilla groups.

The Royal Ulster Constabulary said the device at Castlewellan, about 40 km south of Belfast, appeared to have been triggered when officers entered the police station this morning.

The BBC earlier reported two bombs had been thrown at the police station, but police referred to just one device.

The latest bombing comes at a time of heightened political tension in Northern Ireland.

The 1998 Good Friday Peace agreement established a joint Roman Catholic-Protestant power sharing executive and regional assembly, but squabbles over guerrilla disarmament threaten the peace.

    [07] TAIWAN

Investigators are looking into whether a Singapore Airlines jumbo jet hit an object on the runway in Taipei before a fiery crash killed at least 79 of the 179 people on board and injured 85.

By midday, emergency workers had pulled the last bodies and the flight recorder black boxes from the wreckage of the Los Angeles-bound Boeing 747-400, which crashed on takeoff from Taipei's airport during a typhoon yesterday.

Survivors told harrowing tales of their incredible survival, and reported hearing a bang, followed by a fireball that swept through the cabin from the front of the aircraft. The airliner was packed with fuel for the long haul across the Pacific.

Investigators turned their focus to what might have caused the plane to crash, break into three parts and burst into flames, including the possibility that the aircraft hit a wheel from another vehicle on the runway.

The captain reported that his plane struck "an object" on takeoff as it barrelled down the runway in driving rain and heavy winds

    [08] ANGOLA

A Russian-built passenger plane that crashed in northern Angola was carrying 48 Russians and all are believed dead.

Media reports said the Antonov 26 was carrying 42 passengers and six crew, all Russians, and nobody had survived the accident last night near the northern Angolan town of Saurimo, some 700 km east of Luanda.

Officials said the plane "exploded in the air" after taking off from Saurimo for Luanda.

    [09] SYDNEY

A China Eastern Airlines Airbus with 210 people aboard skidded off the main runway at Sydney Airport after landing today but no injuries were reported.

The aircraft's front wheels sank into a grass verge beside the runway after it skidded almost 90 degrees.

The pilot of flight MU561 from Shanghai to Sydney had reported problems with the aircraft's front landing gear as he approached the airport.

Emergency crews were placed on standby.

Police and ambulance officials said all 194 passengers and 16 crew were examined on board the aircraft and after they were taken by bus to the main airport terminal.

    No injuries were reported.

    [10] World

And now for a look at other developments around the world in brief.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres said he expected to arrange a meeting with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on stopping a wave of violence and resuming peace negotiations.

Mr. Peres, an architect of Israel's first interim peace accords with the Palestine Liberation Organisation in 1993, said he wanted to hear Mr. Arafat's view of the situation after Prime Minister Ehud Barak dropped his objections to their meeting.

Kuwait has once again dismissed overtures by Palestinian leaders to mend ties soured since the 1990 Iraqi invasion, and said it differentiates between support for Palestinians and direct links with President Yasser Arafat.

    [11] ACCIDENT

Police are trying to identify a woman aged between 35 and 40, who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon, when she was hit by a car in Athalassa avenue in Nicosia.
