    [02] NEW YORK ENDS

With the Greek and Turkish-Cypriot sides providing different appreciations of the goings on in New York, the fourth round of UN-sponsored proximity talks on Cyprus will be concluded today.

Un rapporteur for Cyprus Alvaro De Soto met President Clerides and later in the afternoon will meet turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Alvaro De Soto will hold a press conference in which he will provide his own evaluations about the results of the fourth round and disclose the dates for the next round of talks.

According to our reporter in New York, the fifth round of talks will be held in Geneva in early November, while there is also a possibility of a sixth round, which will take place in a remote location of the United States.

In last nights' meeting with Mr De Soto, President Clerides presented an informal document to the UN official, in which the Greek-cypriot side rejects the ideas submitted by the UN on the political form Cyprus will take after a possible solution.

The president of the Republic notes that the ideas are outside the framework of UN resolutions and don't constitute a workable solution, in accordance with European Union standards.

Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on the other hand, expressed the view that there was no negotiation in the fourth round, but only an exchange of views.

    [03] KARAMANLIS VISIT

New Democracy party leader Costas Caramanlis is scheduled to meet Cyprus political leaders.

He is expected to arrive on the island next Saturday, with the purpose of discussing the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, after the conclusion of the fourth round of proximity talks in New York.

Costas Caramanlis will meet President Clerides and all the leaders of political parties, represented in parliament.

Next Sunday, on the first of October, anniversary of Cyprus Independence, the New Democracy leader will be a guest of honour at the annual military parade and will return to Athens on the same afternoon.

    [04] FRAUD ELDERLY

According to the police, an organised ring swindles elderly people out of large amounts of cash and property.

Symeon Symeou, a 48-year old thelogian from Nicosia, was today remanded in custody for eight days in connection with the case.

Symeou, along with others, is alleged to have swindled elderly people into signing proxy documents, and then carried over the victims property to their name.

According to the prosecution, the suspect conned three elderly people out of property worth more than three hundred thousand pounds.

Symeou claims that he gave the particular individuals a lump sum of one hundred and forty two thousand pounds.

The thee old men deny being given any compensation.

    [05] ILLEGALS

There's still no breakthrough in the issue of the 276 illegal immigrants stuck on a ship, off the Limassol coast.

Lebanese authorities keep postponing their decision, therefore a Cyprus delegation will travel to Lebanon to negotiate and discuss new evidence about the case.

Meanwhile, the man arrested on the ship's hold, who denied responsibility, finally admitted that he is the captain and gav crushing evidence that prove beyond doubt that the ship set sail from Lebanon.

Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou said that the Foreign Ministry has already requested the charge d'affaires of Lebanon in Cyprus, to arrange a meeting in Beirut of a Cyprus delegatiom with Lebanese officials.

The meeting will have the sole purpose of discussing new evidence about the case and speeding up the decision process.

This meeting will probably be held on Thursday.

    [06] IMF PRAGUE

Black-clad demonstrators tore cobblestones from Prague's historic streets and torched police with Molotov cocktails today as they made good on vows to besiege the annual meetings of the World Bank and IMF.

The protests erupted into the ugliest since demonstrations against globalisation began here at the weekend as activists pelted police with a hail of bottles and rocks, and several police were set alight when a petrol bomb exploded.

Their colleagues extinguished the flames with water cannons.

Security officials said the activists, who had pledged not to use violence and to blockade the delegates inside the building until they abolished the World Bank and the IMF, had managed to put the congress centre under siege.

Czech President Vaclav Havel, who led the bloodless revolution that toppled Communist rule in 1989, condemned the clashes and called on protesters to end the violence, his spokesman said in a statement.

Officials said at least 30 people had been injured, from both sides of the confrontation.

    [07] YUGO ELECTIONS

Britain warned President Slobodan Milosevic today not to rig election results to retain power in Yugoslavia, saying Western nations had plenty of military might on hand.

In a veiled threat to the Serbian strongman, Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said the latest election results showed it was high time for Milosevic to go -- and without a fight.

Cook said results were now in from two-thirds of the polling stations in Serbia with the opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica 20 points ahead.

Both sides are claiming victory in Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections. The main election commission has yet to issue official results, but Western powers have declared the polls a clear vote for change and urged Milosevic to go quietly.

But Serbian opposition leaders and ordinary Belgraders said such warnings would hurt, not help.

Britain has 15 warships in the Mediterranean near Yugoslavia operating in two distinct training groups, according to the defence ministry.

    [08] OLYMPICS

Greek athletes had a bit of a bad day in today;s events at the Sydney Olympics.

He lifted 212 and a half kilos.

The Greek water-polo team suffered another defeat, the fourth in the row, this time at the hands of Holland.

    The score was 10-7.

On the contrary, Greek canoeing champion Andreas Kiligkarides qualified for the semifinals of the thousand meters event.

And while the games have reached their eleventh day, another doping scandal has hit.
