Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and special adviser of the United Nations on Cyprus Alvaro Nte Soto, met in Athens today.

The third round of settlement talks on Cyprus was at the centre of their talks.

Turkish president Ahmet Sezer arrives in the occupied territories this afternoon for an illegal visit.

Archbishop Chrysostomos lashed out today at the main witness against the Bishop of Limassol Athanasios over charges of sexual misconduct.

Opec last night raised world crude oil supplies in an attempt to bring down prices.

[02] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS

Mr Papapetrou pointed out that Rauf Denktash is trying to worsen the situation so that he can avoid the pressure he is under to enter into substantive negotiations.

He expressed the hope that the turkish side will not attempt to disrupt the status of UNFICUP, that has been functioning for the last thirty six years.

Referring to the turkish presidents' visit to the occupied territories the government spokesman called on Turkey to realize the anachronistic nature of the continuation of the illegal occupation of the island.

[03] ALVARO PAPANDREOU

The sticking point in the process, is the duration of the talks, as Rauf Denktash refuses to conform to talks throughout July and is threatening not to attend.

Mr Nte Soto arrives in Athens from Ankara, where he met Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem.

[04] SEZER CYPRUS

Mr Sezer will meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and turkish-Cypriot party leaders.

He will then hold a press conference.

The Turkish-Cypriot press is giving large coverage to the visit and reports claim that it shows the great importance the Turkish president is attaching to the Cyprus problem.

[05] LEADERS BARSONY

The leaders uninanimously agreed that a serious diplomatic incident arises after Mr Barsony's remarks, but did not reach a decision on any measures that are to be taken.

However, after the meeting, leaders stated that there will be further deliberations with Mr Kyprianou to decide on particular measures to be taken by the House of Parliament.

The leaders also agreed that any recognition of a separate entity in the occupied territories, is unacceptable.

[06] ARCHBISHOP HAIRDRESSER

The Archbishop said that the leading witness on the case, hairdresser and former monk apprentice Christos Stagkos is an unreliable puppet of shadowy character.

Stagkos has already testified in front of a Special Synodic Commitee of the Church appointed to conduct an inquiry on the charges brought against the two hierarchs.

Archbishop Chrysostomos revealed that a letter regarding the character of Stagkos has been rought to the attention of the Holy Synod.

He added that the hairdresser testified against Bishop Athanasios under instructions by Archimandrite Andreas Constantinides and others, in exchange for payment ofdebts that he had in Greece.

Archimandrite Constantidides, The Archbishop pointed out, did this as an act of revenge after the revelations about his relationship with a young man, eho bore him two children.

[07] ACCIDENT TRAGEDY

The latest victim is Theodosis Theodosiou, a student from Agios Therapontas in Limassol.

Theodosiou was fatally injured when his motoped was hit by a car driven by thirty-nine year old Miltiades Tilemachou, an engine driver from Pachna in Limassol.

Tilemachou was arrested by the police.

The accident happened when the driver of the car attempted a right turn to enter a gas station.

He was arrested by the police.

The student wasn't wearing a protective helmet.

[08] FPA PARLIAMENT

A bill is expected to be passed by parliament this afternoon.

[09] OPEC DECISION

As the Kuwaiti Oil Minister said, the leaders of the cartel agreed to lift output for ten member countries to twenty five point four million barrels a day, a modest three percent increment of just over 700,000 barrels daily.

OPEC's new agreement is effective from July the first and includes Iran, that initially had refused to endorse the deal, complaining ofundue pressure from the United States.

The increase in production was smaller than expected, having the opposite results as Oil prices soared again today.

Crude Brent Oil reached twenty nine dollars and thirty one cents a barrel, a rise of twenty nine cents.

[10] EURO2000

The group stages were completed last night.

The last eight include world champion France, co-hosts The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the outsider Balcan teams of Romania, Yugoslavia and Turkey.

In last night's matches, Spain pulled off a miraculus four-three win against Yugoslavia in a dramatic thriller, to qualify for the last eight, leaving Norway, who drew nil-nil with Slovenia, out of the tournament.

With only a few minutes to go, Spain was losing three-two, but in stoppage time, two goals were enough to secure them a place in the last eight.

In fourth group matches, world champion France's fourteen game unbeaten run came to an end.

They lost out to co-hosts the Netherlands by three goals to two.

In the other match played the Czech Republic beat Denmark two-nil.

So, the quarterfinal line up is as follows:

On Saturday evening, Portugal play Turkey in Brussels at seven and ambitious Italy take on Romania in Bruseels at nine forty-five.

On Sunday Yugoslavia play The Netherlands in Amsterdam at seven and Spain battles with France in Bruges at nine fortyfive.

All matches will be shown live on Cybc One.

Tonight, a recording of the Czech Republic-Denmark match will be shown on Cybc One at eleven fifteen.

[11] AFRICA HUNGER

According to aid agencies, a major humanitarian disaster is looming, as long drought, on of the longest on record, has meant no crops this year, coupled with war between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The United Nations has issued an appeal for 378 million dollars for drought relief efforts in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya.

Head of Unicef, Carol Belamy has toured the Horn of Africa and witnessed the tragic situation at first hand.

Bellamy said donors had so far only contributed around six million dollars to UNICEFs thirty million dollar appeal for non-food relief.

[12] TAIL STORY

According to an Internet-based space news service, the evidence comes from photographs taken by the Mars Global Surveyor, which was launched in November 1996 and which has been orbiting the planet since April of last year.

NASA declined to confirm the report, published on www.space.com, that evidence of water in a liquid form had been found.

But it has scheduled a news conference this afternoon to discuss the fndings, which were scheduled to be published in the journal Science later this month.

If confirmed, the finding would give a huge boost to space exploration and to theories that life exists, or has existed in the past, in places other than Earth.
