FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- JUNE 13, 1997

WASHINGTON POLICY-MAKERS HIGHLIGHT COMMUNITY EFFORTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

"The great majority of the 37 key senators and members of Congress with whom we met last week at the 8th Annual PSEKA Cyprus Conference had an important message for us. They said that the Cyprus issue would not be at the top of the American agenda today were it not for the tireless efforts of the Greek-American community -- particularly those who have been coming to Washington, D.C. year after year," said Andrew A. Athens, national chairman of the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC). Mr. Athens also serves in another capacity as the president of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE).

"As these senators and members of Congress spoke to our group of over 120 Greek-American leaders and Cypriots from around the world, they each emphasized the excellent contribution of our community to America's democratic process. In addition to their reference to the annual PSEKA conference in the spring and the annual UHAC conference in the fall, they said that our daily communication throughout the year has been a major force behind moving Cyprus to the front burner of American foreign policy," said Athens.

"We would like to thank all those Greek-American leaders across the country who have been coming to these conferences over the years and making personal sacrifices for the Cyprus tragedy. As these foreign policy experts said, such efforts do make a big difference," concluded Athens.
