Athens said, It is very rare for more than one-third of the 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives to express themselves publicly, as they did on the question of Israels recognition of the Patriarchs election. It is an indication of the significance of Patriarch Irineos and the importance of the things he can do, among which is a health clinic we are planning to help him open. Athens added, All in Washington, D.C. and around the world who have been involved in this recognition issue are pleased that Patriarch Irineos can now fully function. This development will please, as well, the leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians -- Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. President George W. Bush referred to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in the White House as a leading proponent of ecumenical understanding among the faithful of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It will also please the Ecumenical Patriarchs representative in the United States, Archbishop Demetrios, a religious leader held in high esteem by President Bush.
