Cyprus PIO: Foreign Trade Statistics, January - July '96 (96-11-01)Cyprus Press and Information Office: Statements and Announcements in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Foreign trade statistics for January-July, 1996 (1/11/1996)The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary form for the period January-July, 1996.The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period under review were: (a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) rose by 13,7% to £1.109,3 mn as compared with £975,4 mn in January-July, 1995. (b) Imports for home consumption increased by 9,2% to reach £868,3 mn from £795,4 mn in January-July, 1995. (c) The E.U. countries supplied goods valued at £536,2 mn or 48,3% of the total imports as compared with £504,2 mn or 51,7% during January-July, 1995. (d) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-July, 1996, were £359,5 mn or 41,4% as against £336,8 mn or 42,3% in January-July, 1995, followed by consumer goods with £185,5 mn or 21,4% as against £166,7 mn or 21,0%; transport equipment amounted to £103,9 mn or 12,0% compared to £108,1 mn or 13,6% and capital goods accounted for £97,7 mn or 11,3% as compared with £88,9 mn or 11,2% in January- July, 1995. (e) Total exports amounted to £396,7 mn as compared with £312,3 mn in January-July, 1995. (f) Domestic exports including shipstores, fell to £151,5 mn in January-July, 1996 in comparison with £157,7 mn in January-July, 1995 whilst re-exports including shipstores, rose sharply to £245,2 mn from £154,6 mn in January-July, 1995. (g) The E.U. countries absorbed 60,7% or £90,0 mn of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores, followed by the Arab countries with a share of 17,4% or £25,8 mn. The corresponding shares of the E.U. countries and the Arab countries for January-July, 1995 were 64,9% and 14,8% respectively. (h) Industrial products of domestic produce exported (excluding shipstores) during January- July, 1996, accounted for 65,5% or £97,1 mn as compared with 62,2% or £96,4 mn, with clothing and footwear accounting for £22,5 mn and £3,2 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-July, 1995 amounted to £26,5 mn and of footwear to £3,4 mn. Exports of agricultural products were £50,6 mn in January-July, 1996 and £58,1 mn in January-July, 1995 with potatoes accounting for £31,0 mn compared to £39,8 mn and citrus fruit for £14,1 mn compared to £13,0 mn in January-July, 1995.
