STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC Mr. GLAFCOS CLERIDES (18/9/96)Cyprus Press and Information Office: Statements and Announcements in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>I believe that the people should be informed about certain dangers which appeared on the horizon, but are already gone. I make this statement because it is evident that certain rumours have circulated, which caused concern among the people and which are unfounded. According to these rumours the Embassies of certain countries advised their citizens that the UN had information about a possible Turkish move in the villages of Athienou, Troulloi and Liopetri and that allegedly there has been movement of Turkish forces. The Government investigated these rumours, which proved to be false. The Cyprus Government, apart from these rumours, was aware of the following:
In the diplomatic field, this information was passed on to the United Nations and the permanent members of the Security Council so as to respond accordingly. At the same time, these reports were brought to the attention of the Greek American community in the United States, which acted effectively. I believe that the dangers are gone and for this reason these rumours should stop, because they cause concern to the people and because they give the wrong impression that we easily panic.
