[01] President Papadopoulos sends letter to UN Secretary-General
The letter of the President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, to the
UN Secretary-General has been sent, the Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros
Chrysostomides, announced. Speaking last Friday at the daily press briefing,
Mr Chrysostomides refrained from revealing the content of President
Papadopoulos' letter to Mr Kofi Annan.
Replying to questions, the Government Spokesman said he did not think that
the UN Chief had withdrawn his demand, for resuming his good offices
mission, that both Cyprus sides put his peace plan to simultaneous separate
referenda. At the same time, Mr Chrysostomides pointed out that Mr Annan's
demand for determining a specific date for a referendum on his plan was not
feasible because the exact content of the Annan plan had not yet been
finalised.
"This condition basically puts the cart before the horse, and we will have
to see how to proceed before determining a date for a referendum", the
Government Spokesman added.
[02] President discusses Euro-elections issue with political parties
The President of the Republic had a meeting last Friday with political
party leaders and representatives, in the presence of Attorney General Mr
Solon Nikitas, to discuss the issue of the June 2004 elections of the
European Parliament. In remarks to the press after the meeting, Interior
Minister Mr Andreas Christou said discussions had focused on some legal,
political and constitutional matters pertaining to the issue of the Euro-
elections. He added that it was deemed necessary to hold the meeting prior
to the conclusion of the discussion on Euro-elections at the House of
Representatives and before the political parties would reach their final
decisions on the issue. Mr Christou stressed that the Cyprus Republic, the
Government, the House of Representatives and all the political parties were
trying to set up the best conditions so that Turkish Cypriots could
participate in the Euro-elections on an equal basis.
He added that it was essential to work out a detailed method for registering
Turkish Cypriots in the electoral list and voting.
[03] Commission announces conclusion of structural fund dialogue with
Cyprus
The European Commission announced last Thursday that the negotiations for
the allocation of structural funds to Cyprus, for the period 2004 - 2006,
had been successfully concluded. According to a Commission press release,
Cyprus would benefit from Community funding amounting to 53,3 million euros
during the aforementioned period. Cyprus would also receive an additional
amount of 54 million euros from the Union's structural funds to co-finance
infrastructures in the environment and transport sectors.
Funding under Objective three of the structural funds seeks to promote the
modernization of policies and systems in the field of employment, education
and training and life-long learning in Cyprus. It includes two priorities,
development and promotion of active labour market policies with a Community
contribution of 11,4 million euros and promotion and improvement of
education and training systems and life-long learning with a Community
contribution of 10 million euros. In addition to that, an amount of 0,54
million euros will be made available for technical assistance. Regarding
the fisheries sector, Cyprus will receive 1,64 million euros for the
adjustment of fishing effort, and a further 0,18 million euros for fleet
renewal and modernization and development of aquaculture, fishing ports and
processing and marketing.
