[01] Cyprus Government welcomes Dutch Lower House resolution

The Cyprus Government has expressed its full satisfaction over the adoption of a resolution by the Dutch Lower House, which affirmed that Turkey could not begin accession talks with the European Union unless it complied with the Copenhagen criteria and agreed to a plan providing for the end of the division of Cyprus. Acting Government Spokesman Mr Marios Garoyian said yesterday that all parliamentary parties, except the Labour party, had voted in favour of the resolution. "This is a very positive development which we welcome", Mr Garoyian noted.

[02] Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary to attend EU meeting in Amsterdam

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Sotos Zackheos, departed today for Amsterdam to attend a two-day meeting of the Permanent Secretaries of the Foreign Affairs Ministries of the 15 EU member states and ten acceding countries, on 5 and 6 December. The meeting will mainly deal with the EU's foreign policy and in particular, EU relations with the Arab world and ways of promoting development in the Arab countries. Another issue to be discussed concerns the creation of a European Diplomatic Service, aimed at forming a common action between the diplomatic services of the EU member states.
