[01] Cyprus and Greek Foreign Ministries coordinate future cooperation
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, met yesterday with
Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister, Mr Tasos Yiannitsis, who is in Cyprus
for a two-day working visit heading a multi-member delegation. Speaking
after the meeting, Mr Iacovou said the talks with Mr Yiannitsis and the
Greek delegation had focused on future planning and cooperation covering
the period until the end of 2004, starting from the EU General Affairs and
External Relations Council which would take place on Monday, the European
Council in December, and the celebrations the Cyprus Government was
planning for the official accession of the island to the EU on 1 May 2004.
"We discussed the prospects regarding the voting process in the occupied
areas, the possibilities of resuming the bicommunal talks and prospects for
their success in the future and after the second half of 2004, if no
solution is found in the meantime", Mr Iacovou added. The Foreign Minister
further said that they had discussed issues concerning consular cooperation,
and in particular the issuing of visas as of 1 January 2004, noting
Greece's willingness to assist Cyprus in every field. Greece's Alternate
Foreign Minister, Mr Yiannitsis, expressed the position that the Cyprus
issue and the excellent progress achieved by Cyprus in implementing the
acquis communautaire would be included in the conclusions of the General
Affairs Council meeting on Monday as well as in future Council meetings.
Mr Yiannitsis was received this morning by the President of the Republic,
Mr Tassos Papadopoulos and the House President, Mr Demetris Christofias.
