[01] Ankara holds the key to a Cyprus settlement, says House President

The President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Christofias, has noted that Turkey was holding the key to a solution of the Cyprus problem and called on international mediators to exert pressure on Ankara to change its intransigent policy on Cyprus. Speaking last Sunday at an event organised by overseas Cypriots' organisations in Birmingham, Mr Christofias said he did not expect a solution by 1 May 2004, the date of Cyprus' official accession to the EU, due to Turkey's unaltered stance on Cyprus. Referring to the forthcoming "elections" in the occupied areas of the island, the House President expressed hope for a win of the opposition parties and noted, "If these powers were to win, the preconditions would be created for us to be able to talk more rationally and humanely together". At the same time, Mr Christofias warned foreign mediators not to expect any major changes even if the opposition forces were to win, since all decisions on the Cyprus problem were taken in Ankara.

[02] Annual seminar of Greek and Cyprus press officers takes place in Nicosia

The annual informative seminar of the Heads of the Greek and Cyprus Press Offices began yesterday in Nicosia. Addressing the seminar were, inter alia, the Minister of Interior Mr Andreas Christou, Greece's Minister of Press and Government Spokesman Mr Christos Protopapas, Cyprus' Government Spokesman Mr Kypros Chrysostomides, and the Director of the Press and Information Office Mr Yiannakis Solomou. In his opening address, the Interior Minister noted that the seminar, which was taking place in the framework of the Protocol of Cooperation between the Greek Ministry of Press and the Cyprus Interior Ministry signed in 1996, was yet another sign of the excellent collaboration between the two countries in all fields. The Greek Minister of Press, Mr Protopapas, said that the seminar was a good opportunity for Greek Press Officers to be briefed on all aspects of the Cyprus problem and the policy followed jointly by the Cyprus and Greek governments.

He further said that the seminar would also focus on the EU Intergovernmental Conference and the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. On his part, Cyprus' Government Spokesman, Mr Chrysostomides, underlined the significance of the seminar in exchanging knowledge and views and because it offered the opportunity to outline the goals, strategy and pursuits of the Greek and Cyprus governments as regards the international public opinion and the public opinion at the EU level. The Director of the Press and Information Office, Mr Solomou, made reference to the excellent cooperation and coordination between the Greek and Cyprus Press Offices, and noted the assistance offered by the Greek Press Officers to their Cyprus colleagues especially as regards the Cyprus problem. He further noted that the role and tasks of the Cyprus Press Officer would soon change dramatically due to Cyprus' accession to the European Union. The seminar closes its sessions today.
