[01] President Papadopoulos departs for Rome to participate in Intergovernmental
Conference
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, departs
today for Rome, where he will head the Cyprus delegation to the extraordinary
summit of Heads of State and Government for the opening of the Intergovernmental
Conference. The Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) is called upon to
approve the Draft Constitutional Treaty drawn up by the Convention on the
Future of Europe after sixteen months of high-level political debate.
The Acceding States will participate in the IGC works on an equal footing
with the current EU Member States. The three candidate countries, Bulgaria
and Romania and Turkey, will take part in IGC meetings as observers.
[02] Cyprus-Russia agreement on visa abolition terminated as of 1 January
2004
Within the framework of its harmonisation with the EU acquis communautaire,
the Republic of Cyprus has given notice of termination of its agreement
with the Russian Federation concerning the abolition of visa requirements.
The agreement will be terminated on 1 January 2004, when visa requirements
will be re-introduced for Russian citizens visiting Cyprus and Cypriot
citizens travelling to Russia.
[03] Cyprus opens General Consulate in St Petersburg
The Russian Foreign Ministry has notified the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign
Affairs that the Russian Federation had consented to the opening of a
General Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus to St Petersburg. The Ministry
of Foreign Affairs is making all the necessary arrangements for the opening
of the Consulate the soonest possible.
