[01] The signing of so-called "framework agreement for a customs union" a
flagrant violation of international law, says Greek Foreign Ministry
spokesman
The spokesman of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Panayiotis
Beglitis, has stated that the signing of the so-called "framework agreement
for a customs union" between Turkey and the Illegal regime of the Turkish-
occupied part of Cyprus "is a flagrant violation of the international law
principles, of the UN Chart and Security Council Decisions, as well as of
the EU principles and decisions". Commenting on the agreement last Saturday,
Mr Beglitis noted that "it is contrary to the institutional framework of
relations between the EU and the Republic of Cyprus and also Turkey itself,
a candidate for accession". "This is an illegal act which will burden
Turkey's European course and the evaluation of its candidacy by the
competent Community bodies", he concluded.
[02] Cyprus has highest population rise among EU acceding states, according
to Eurostat
Cyprus had the highest rise in population figures and the highest fertility
rate among the EU acceding countries, for the year 2002.
According to a report on the first results of the demographic data
collection for 2002 in Europe, published jointly last week by the
Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the Council of
Europe, Cyprus ranked first among the EU acceding states as regards
population increase in 2002, with a percentage increase of 14,5%, and
second among the EU "25" following Ireland, which had the highest
percentage of population increase among the 15 EU member states with 15,2%.
Cyprus was also the acceding state with the highest fertility rate (11,
1%). As regards life expectancy, it was longest in Cyprus, among the
acceding countries, with an average life expectancy of 81.0 years for women
and 76.1 for men.
Overall, the EU population increased by 1 290 000 in 2002, an annual rate
of 0.3%, bringing the total number to 379 million.
