[01] Greek Cypriot side will continue its efforts to achieve a just and
viable solution
The President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos reiterated the Greek
Cypriot side's determination to continue, irrespective of the cost and
sacrifice, to struggle until it succeeds in reversing the present status
quo and it secures the reunification of Cyprus. In his speech, which was
read out by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the anti occupation rally
for Famagusta on 2 August 2003, President Papadopoulos condemned the
Turkish invasion and occupation and noted that on the same day every year
the people of Cyprus remember with great nostalgia the beautiful town of
Famagusta and the surrounding villages, which for the last 29 years are
under Turkish occupation. Referring to the solution of the Cyprus problem,
President Papadopoulos said that under the present circumstances, the
reunification of Cyprus is feasible only within the framework of a
bicommunal, bizonal federation and the United Nations Secretary General's
Plan. "In the most clear, official and categorical way we reiterate the
almost unanimous policy of the National Council that we remain ready and
eager, without preconditions, to promptly respond to any invitation by the
UN Secretary General to resume negotiations for a comprehensive settlement
of the Cyprus problem in the framework and in the parameters of the Annan
Plan," he said. The President promised that the Greek Cypriot side would
continue, in the most constructive way, its efforts to achieve a just and
viable solution to the Cyprus problem before 1st May 2004, so that a
reunited Cyprus can accede to the European Union.
He underlined that the accession of a reunited Cyprus would be in the
interest of all the lawful inhabitants of the Republic of Cyprus, Greek
Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, who would be
able to enjoy the multiple benefits offered by European Union membership.
