with Iran's leadership which focused on bilateral relations and issues of
common interest. On Saturday, Mr Iacovou had a meeting with his Iranian
counterpart Mr Kamal Kharrazi, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem,
in depth, and the role of Iran at the Islamic Conference. Mr Iacovou
thanked Mr Kharrazi for Iran's firm support to Cyprus at the Islamic

Iraq. Yesterday, Mr Iacovou was received by the President of Iran, Mr
Mohammad Khatami, who assured him of Iran's readiness to further enhance
bilateral relations and cooperation. The Iranian President congratulated
Cyprus on its accession to the EU and noted that Cyprus' geographic
position, the fact that it is a European country but close to the Middle
East, renders it more sensitive to regional problems.
For his part, Mr Iacovou congratulated the Iranian President on his
initiative regarding the "Dialogue of Civilisations", noting that it would
promote understanding between nations and referred to the organization of
three conferences in Cyprus on this particular issue and the creation of an
institute in the framework of Euro-Mediterranean-cooperation. The Foreign
Minister is expected to return to Cyprus today.
