[01] Foreign Minister makes representations over Denktash's threats to settle Varosha

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, has made representations to the Ambassadors to Cyprus of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council over the recent threats by the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to settle the fenced-off area of Famagusta. Speaking to reporters yesterday after his separate meetings with the five Ambassadors, Mr Iacovou said that Mr Denktash was obviously trying to mislead the international public opinion and obstruct the resumption of the UN-led peace talks. He further noted that the Turkish Cypriot leader had not managed to convince anyone that his moves were a gesture of goodwill. On Mr Denktash's proposals to reopen the Nicosia Airport and settle the closed area of Famagusta, the Foreign Minister said that "it is an odd attitude, on the one hand to propose confidence building measures and on the other hand to threaten", and added that his interlocutors had acknowledged that fact. Mr Iacovou further said that he had made three remarks to the Ambassadors, namely that the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General had found the Turkish side responsible for the situation in the closed area of Famagusta, the position of the Security Council pointing out the need to return Famagusta to its rightful inhabitants, and the continued violation of the status quo at Strovilia in spite of the latest UN Security Council resolution calling for the immediate restoration of the status quo ante in that area. He concluded by saying that he was overall pleased with the response of the five Ambassadors on all the issues raised.

The Statistical Service of the European Communities, Eurostat, issued a press report yesterday regarding the inflation rates recorded in the member states and acceding countries for June 2003. According to the report, the Euro-zone annual inflation rose from 1,9% in May to 2,0% in June 2003. A year earlier the rate was 1,9%. The annual inflation for the EU 15 was 1,8% in June 2003, the same as in May 2003. A year earlier the rate was 1, 7%. With regard to Cyprus, an inflation rate of 3,7% was recorded for June 2003, indicating a significant decrease from the 4,9% rate in May of the same year.
