[01] Finance Minister holds talks with European Parliament economic
committee delegation
The Minister of Finance, Mr Markos Kyprianou, had a meeting yesterday with
a delegation of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the
European Parliament, the members of which are on an official visit to the
island in the framework of a series of visits to the ten acceding
countries. The delegation includes the Chairwoman of the Committee, MEP Ms
Christa Randzio - Plath (European Socialist Party). The meeting mainly
focused on assessing the progress made by Cyprus in harmonising with the
economic and monetary acquis, while particular emphasis was given on
taxation and budgetary issues. The Finance Minister briefed the members of
the EU parliamentary delegation on the provisions of the tax reform,
especially as regards off-shore companies, and outlined the economic policy
to be followed by Cyprus once it would become a full EU member state.
On her part, the Chairwoman of the European Parliament Committee on
Economic and Monetary Affairs, Ms Christa Randzio - Plath, expressed
satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and noted the significant
progress achieved by Cyprus in the field of economic and monetary policy.
The MEPs also met yesterday with the members of the Finance and Budgetary
Committee of the Cypriot House of Representatives.
[02] Cyprus protests to UN for new air violations by Turkish military
aircrafts
The Charge d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United
Nations, Mr George Kasoulides, has sent a letter to the UN Secretary-
General Mr Kofi Annan, dated 30 June 2003, protesting on behalf of the
Government of the Republic of Cyprus for new violations of the flight
information region (FIR) of Nicosia and the national airspace of the
Republic of Cyprus by Turkish military aircrafts during March, April, May,
and June 2003. Mr Kasoulides noted in the letter that the violations were
breaching international law as well as UN Security Council resolutions on
Cyprus, and called for their immediate cessation.
He expressed hope that the Turkish government would respect the sovereignty
of the Republic of Cyprus and refrain from further violations, adding that
"the government of Turkey should also heed the appeals of the international
community to change its own negative stance and exercise its influence on
the Turkish-Cypriot leadership, in order to contribute to the efforts to
find a just and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of
United Nations resolutions". The letter has circulated as a document of the
UN General Assembly, under agenda item 31 on the preliminary list, and of
the UN Security Council.
[03] British Premier urges Cyprus sides to resume peace talks
The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, has expressed hope that the
attempts by the international community to get the two sides in Cyprus back
to the negotiating table would be successful. Mr Blair, who was replying to
a question by MP Mr Tom Cox in the House of Commons last Wednesday, noted
that the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, "recently made it clear that
the UN proposals that we strongly supported remain on the table", and
pledged that his government would continue its discussions with both the
Greek and Turkish governments "to see how we can bring about a settlement".
"I therefore very much hope that we are able to mount a constructive
attempt to get the parties back talking to ensure that we can reach a
settlement on this issue, which would be beneficial for all the people of
the island of Cyprus", the British Prime Minister said. Mr Blair further
noted that there was "a strong feeling among the Turkish Cypriots that they
want to be part of the European Union and to have the benefits of
membership."
