Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 02-12-23Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 23 December 2002CONTENTS[01] UN chairs organisational meeting for two technical committees"The two parties, the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, have held an organisational meeting, chaired by the United Nations, for the two technical committees, which the leaders had agreed to create on October 4 in the presence of the Secretary-General".The above statement on Cyprus was made, last Friday, by the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Ms. Hua Jiang, during the regular press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. Ms. Jiang added that "the meeting charted the future work of the committees, which will undertake their technical discussions in parallel with the political negotiations and without prejudice to their outcome". "The members of the committees plan to meet again on January 7, 2003", she concluded. [02] British MP pledges support for just solution of Cyprus problemThe Union of Occupied Areas of Cypriots living in England, in cooperation with the British Labour MP, Mr. Tom Cox, organised an event on Cyprus last week at the House of Commons. Present at the event were Cyprus' High Commissioner to Britain, Ms. Myrna Cleopa, the President of the Cyprus National Federation of Cypriots living in the Great Britain, Mr. Charis Sophoclides, and a large audience of overseas Cypriots. In his welcoming address, the Labour MP Mr. Cox said that he realised the concern of overseas Cypriots regarding the current efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem within very tight time limits, and expressed the view that the UN solution plan should be rejected if it did not fully safeguard basic human rights. At the same time, he pointed out that the UN plan was not a `take-it-or-leave-it` document, but a framework and an invitation for further negotiations; an invitation to which the Turkish side had not responded, the British MP claimed. Mr. Cox emphasised that the friends of Cyprus, in and out of the House of Commons, would continue to support the Cypriots' just cause, especially after the Copenhagen European Council's decision inviting the island to join the EU as a full member. Cyprus' High Commissioner to Britain, Ms. Cleopa, who also addressed the audience, stressed that the Cyprus Government remained focused on reaching a lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem, and after the Copenhagen decision. She added that the Greek Cypriot side was ready to cooperate with the UN Secretary-General for achieving a settlement.
