[01] President Clerides presides over National Council meeting

The President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides presided yesterday over a meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President.

After the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr. Michalis Papapetrou made the following statement:

"The National Council was briefed by the President of the Republic on the New York meetings and the European Commission report, and then there was a discussion. The political parties have expressed their opinion on various issues, on the committees and the course of the Cyprus problem, in general.

After the President's contacts in Athens, the National Council will reconvene on Monday at 9:00am to continue with the discussion".

[02] Cyprus welcomes establishment of International Criminal Court

Cyprus, being a victim of foreign occupation, attaches great importance to the provisions of the Rome Statute and welcomes the establishment of the International Criminal Court, Cyprus' UN Permanent Representative Mr. Sotos Zackheos said in his address to the Sixth Committee of the 57th Session of the General Assembly, yesterday at UN Headquarters in New York.

Mr. Zackheos, who called the Court "a landmark instrument of international law", underlined the fact that the Court's jurisdiction extended over war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as the forcible transfer of population, the transfer by the occupying power of its own civilian population into the occupied territory, the enforced disappearances of persons and the subsequent refusal to give information on the fate of those persons.

He also reminded that Cyprus had contributed actively in the deliberations which led to the establishment of the Court, and pledged the Cyprus Government's commitment and readiness to continue with this active contribution with a view to meeting the challenges ahead, including the election of judges. It was within that context that the Government had decided to present the candidature of Mr. Georgios Pikis, President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Cyprus, for the post of a judge of the Court, Mr. Zackheos added.

"We owe it to millions of victims throughout history and to the future generations to proceed unwaveringly towards our goal for an effective independent court, as a necessary instrument of a new ethos in international relations", he concluded.
