The President of the Republic, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, presided yesterday over a meeting of the National Council, which is the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem.

Following the National Council's meeting, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Michalis Papapetrou, made the following statement:

"The President of the Republic briefed the National Council in detail on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, including the visits of Lord Hannay and Mr. Weston to Cyprus, on the course of the talks, on his meetings in Paris and on the last document proposed by Mr. Denktash. Various opinions were voiced and the National Council will continue its deliberations on these issues at a new meeting before the President's departure for New York, but after the completion of the current round of direct talks; that is between 26 September, which will be the last day of the talks, and 1 October, which is date of the departure of the President, there will be a new meeting of the National Council."

The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. George Papandreou, met with his American counterpart, Mr. Colin Powell, at the UN headquarters in New York yesterday.

During the 20-minute long meeting, the two Ministers discussed the Greek EU Presidency in the first six months of 2003, the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, and the Cyprus problem.

With regard to the Cyprus problem, Mr. Papandreou stated after the meeting: "Mr. Powell zealously wishes to support Kofi Annan in his efforts to solve this problem, which creates friction between Greece and Turkey".

"We also discussed Turkey's European course and the Greek stance, which he (Mr. Powell) finds very constructive", the Greek FM added.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides, met yesterday with the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Jack Straw, in the presence of the British Envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay.

Earlier that day, he attended the UN Assembly's High-level Session to support the New Partnership for African Development. In addition, and within the framework of his meetings with foreign counterparts, Mr. Kasoulides had encounters with his Armenian equivalent, Mr. Vartan Oskanian, the Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, Mr. Norman Jose Caldena Cardenal and that of Switzerland, Mr. Joseph Deiss.
