[01] New US Ambassador presents his credentials

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides received today, at a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the Credentials of the new US Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr Michael Klosson.

Presenting his credentials to President Clerides, Mr Klosson, spoke of the "auspicious and historic moment that Cyprus faces", describing it as "an unprecedented chance for a brighter future for Cypriots across the island".

Making reference to his government's stance, he said that it "has long believed that a just, durable, and comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem is possible, and would present many benefits to Cyprus and its people".

"A settlement would bring peace and stability to the region. The UN Secretary-General and his Special Advisor also recognize the crucial part that the United Nations can play in achieving this goal" he added.

Receiving the Credentials, President Clerides spoke of the excellent relations of Cyprus and the United States adding that the two countries "share common values and ideals, notably the rule of law, the respect of human rights and individual freedoms, strong commitment to democracy and to the safeguarding of international peace and security".

"With regard to our bilateral relations, I am glad to say they are at a very high level. The USA is one of the leading exporters of goods to Cyprus and there is close cooperation between the competent authorities of both countries in combating drug trafficking, money laundering and international terrorism, especially after the tragic events of September 11, 2001" he added.

Referring to Cyprus' accession to the European Union he said it "opens a unique window of opportunity to resolve the long standing Cyprus problem, provided that the Turkish side demonstrates the necessary will for a historical compromise on Cyprus".

[02] New German Ambassador presents his credentials

Germany's new ambassador to Cyprus, Dr. Jochen Trebesch, presented today his credentials to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafcos Clerides.

The new German Ambassador praised the thriving bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed his country's "full and unqualified support" for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem. Dr. Trebesch called on the Turkish Cypriot side to show a constructive spirit in the UN- led direct talks to reach a settlement and urged for perseverance in achieving that goal. "All concerned should recognise the fact that achieving a solution is now a race against time. This unique opportunity to reach a negotiated settlement must be grasped prior to the forthcoming decisions on EU enlargement", he added.

With regard to Cyprus' EU accession course, the German diplomat commented positively on Cyprus' "exemplary speed and professionalism" in handling the harmonisation process, and expressed his country's belief that Cyprus will be among the countries to complete negotiations by the end of 2002.

On his part, President Clerides thanked Germany for its constant support in the efforts to reach a settlement to the Cyprus problem and stressed Germany's important role in influencing Turkey to contribute at the negotiating table. The President of the Republic also praised the flourishing relations between the two countries and emphasised the need for a further enhancement of bilateral relations, to the mutual benefit of both countries and their peoples.
