[01] Cyprus denounces Turkish Cypriot journalists' "conviction"
The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the Office of the United Nations
in Geneva Ambassador Alexandros Vikis, sent, on 16 August, a letter to the
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mrs. Mary Robinson, and to the
President of the UN Human Rights Committee, in which he denounced the
recent "conviction" of Turkish Cypriot journalists Sener Levent and Memduh
Ener by the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.
In his letter, which will circulate as an official document of the Human
Rights Committee, the Ambassador points out that the conviction of Levent
and Ener is an attempt of the pseudostate to prevent the freedom of the
press and the freedom of expression. Furthermore, Ambassador Vikis requests
the intervention of both the High Commissioner and the President of the UN
Human Rights Committee for the release of the two journalists.
[02] House President expresses sympathy to flooded countries
The President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias sent
yesterday separate letters of solidarity to the presidents of the
parliaments of Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and
Austria, parts of which have been flooded as a result of the calamity that
has befallen them.
In his letters, the House President expresses, on behalf of all the Members
of the House of Representatives as well as the people of Cyprus, "deep
condolences to the families of the victims, as well as sincere sympathy to
all those who are suffering as a result of this unspeakable disaster".
