[01] President Clerides meets with US Coordinator on Cyprus

The President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday the Special Coordinator on Cyprus at the US State Department, Mr Thomas Weston.

After the meeting, the Government Spokesman, Mr Michalis Papapetrou, made the following statement:

"During the meeting between the President of the Republic and Mr Weston reviewed the developments in the Cyprus problem so far and Mr Weston briefed the President on his trip to Ankara and Athens.

Thereafter, there was an exchange of views about how to progress with this procedure and o make it more effective. It was ascertained that the time margins are pressing. During the meeting I formed the opinion that from the American side there were no comments or negative remarks concerning the way the Greek Cypriot side handles the issues and the talks."

[02] European Parliament adopts resolution on Cyprus

The European Parliament yesterday adopted a resolution on Cyprus' accession to the EU. The resolution was based on a report prepared by the rapporteur to the European Parliament on Cyprus Mr Jacques Poos.

The resolution reaffirms that only a single, sovereign, bi-zonal, bi- communal Cypriot state will join the EU. It also points out that the Cypriot state should have full authority at international level and must be in a position to exercise decision making power.

Moreover, it says that whatever constitutional arrangements the parties might lay down, the acquis communautaire, fundamental freedoms and human rights must be safeguarded in full.

The European Council reiterates its position that the Helsinki European Council resolutions will apply fully should an agreement prove impossible to achieve within requisite timeframe.

[03] Security Council extends the mandate of UNFICYP

The Security Council yesterday morning extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for a further six months, until 15 December 2002.

By unanimously adopting resolution 1416 (2002), the Council also urged the Turkish Cypriot side and the Turkish forces to rescind the restrictions imposed on 30 June 2000 on the operations of UNFICYP and to restore the military status quo ante of Strovilia.

By further terms of the resolution, the Council requested the Secretary- General to submit a report by 1 December 2002 on the situation. It also reaffirmed all its relevant resolutions on Cyprus, in particular, resolution 1251 (1999) and those subsequent to it.
