[01] Third round of UN-led direct talks on Cyprus resumes

The first meeting of the third round of the UN-led direct talks between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, was held on Tuesday 9th April 2002, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Mr Alvaro de Soto. Members of each side's delegation were also present at the meeting.

President Clerides and Mr Denktash have agreed to meet twice a week, on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings.

[02] Cyprus Ambassador addresses the United Nations Commission on Human Rights

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights Ambassador Mr Alexandros Vikis, addressing the 57th Session of the Commission analyzed the current state of affairs regarding human rights in Cyprus, highlighting the massive violations of human rights of Cypriots due to the 1974 Turkish invasion and continuing occupation.

Making reference to the Decision of the Commission, with which the body asked of the UN Secretary-General to submit a yearly report on the situation of human rights in Cyprus, Mr Vikis underlined that the current year's report did not reflect reality and, based on political intensions, undermined the continuing massive violations of human rights in Cyprus by Turkey.

[03] Cyprus and India sign investment agreement

Cyprus and India signed yesterday an agreement for the mutual promotion and protection of investments. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance, Mr Takis Klerides, and by the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr Omar Abdullah, currently in Cyprus for a two-day official visit at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides.

Speaking to the press after the signing ceremony, Mr Klerides expressed his conviction that the agreement would contribute further to the enhancing of economic relations between the two countries for mutual benefit, since it would provide Cypriot and Indian investors with guarantees, safeguard against non-commercial risks and would encourage them to invest in the two countries.

On his part the Indian Minister said that more emphasis should be given to the economic relations between the two countries and even more could be done in order to promote investments and trade between the two countries. In conclusion he said that his country looked forward to Cyprus' accession to the European Union, as Cyprus is in a strategic position with access to Europe, West Eurasia and North Africa.
